I'm having a crown put on a tooth at the dentist tommorrow, before I mention teeth whitening to him I wondered if anyone has tried any good shop bought teeth whitening products. I was looking at giving Crest 3D white strips a go. Are they any good, anyone used them?

Can only advise against them as a waste of money. There is that new product which you paint onto your teeth, but it starts to flake off in patches(not a good look).
I wouldn't go for anything other than something which cosmetic dentists do there and then in house. Some will send you away with a gel and shield(again a waste of money).. Either veneers or bleach(this is not good for teeth as thins them down) unless something even newer has come onto the market
Thanks for the info, I'll see what the dentist advises. I thought they sounded too good to be true, otherwise everyone would be walking around with Holywood smiles.

I had porcelain veneers put on my front teeth back in 1998 and they are still looking good.

I paid £300 to get mine done only to find that you can buy the kit online " polar Night" google it. I did get my own moulds made to measure included in the £300 BUT they kit comes with ones you heat up.
Because my teeth have a slight pale greyish tinge to them (hard to explain) the dentist suggested that the bleach method might make the grey worse, however there may be a new procedure available next time I go for a check up next year. In the meantime I won't be satisfied unless I have given the 3D white strips a go, so I have asked my mum to see if she can buy any whilst shopping in Boots today. I have also read that a little Baking Soda on the toothbrush a couple of times a week may help.

Is the tinge from fillings? I would forget any of these silly strip ideas. Your mouth is full of saliva and will start to break down anything you put in it.. stain removal is really the only way to get them super clean or new crowns :-)

Don't waste your money, seriously they don't work. I have white teeth as it is and tried them to get that Hollywood smile, didn't make any difference. A family member with slightly stained teeth again tried them and made no difference.
Anything off the counter in places like Boots won't and don't work. If they did then there would be no need for cosmetic dentistry..
Maybe contact a cosmetic dentist you only does that and not a regular dentist to see what they recommend for you.
My dentist does different procedures to that of one who purely deals in the cosmetic side..I just don't have the money to have that "Simon Cowell" look...
I know your right, I thought there may be a quick fix, as I work 6 days a week, time is limited. However as business is a little quite during this holiday period I may find time to find a local cosmetic dentist. Life is too short to give up my Caffeine and Pepsi Max habits, and I'm not desperate for a Hollywood smile, I don't want to risk damage to my teeth.
I wouldn't want to look like Simon Cowell anyway I always think he looks like he has a mouth fall of false teeth!
I've had a lucky escape, my mum is back from shopping and our local Boots store doesn't stock white strips. That says a lot for the product, thank you all for your imputs. Maybe I should just eat what my dog eats (Chappie) because he has amazing white shiney teeth. Don't know bout the breath though!

It costs around £5000 to have them all done properly... I have caps on my upper 2 front, and veneers on the bottom row.. I also had all my fillings removed and replaced with white fillings..
the caps were £350 each.. the veneers were £70 each and the fillings were £30 each to remove and replace.. This was done just over 11 years ago, but when Ollie knocked on of my caps and broke it a couple of years back, it cost nearly £700 to replace it...
At the dentist recently just for check up, I asked for a 'guestimate' for whitening the whole mouth, and he said in the region of £5000 -£6000
Guess that won't be happing too soon :-)
Thanks for the info Kayc, your website is interesting also.

I did similar Kay, I replaced any teeth with fillings with new porcelain crowns about 8 I think I am sure it was about £350 a tooth and I dot a gold inlay also which my dentist convinced me to try. Then I got the bleaching done. I wouldn't bother again with the bleaching as my teeth are quite white anyway but for smokers, tea/coffee/wine drinkers it probably works a treat.
I do love to see nice teeth :-)
I've got my new tub of bicarbonate soda next to my toothpaste this morn, dabbed my toothbrush in it. I'll see what happens.
buy the kit online " polar Night" google it. I did get my own moulds made to measure included in the £300 BUT they kit comes with ones you heat up.Is the polar night then same quality as you would get at the dentist.
Have spent around £4000 on my teeth so far, has the same, all my old filling replaced with porcelain ones, had a couple of crowns and a bridge.
Just thinking now of having my teeth whitened, the only thing putting me off is have terrible sensitive gums, and I have been told it hurts!!!
But the polar night sounds interesting , my daughter wants hers dont , and thats not to bad a price!!

Yip exactly. I spent £300 then £125 for more gel tubes only to find it on google.
My dentist used it on his top teeth only so he could show the difference :-)
I have never had sensitive teeth in my life, but after using a little bicarb of soda on my toothbrush this week, my cuppa this morning caused real painful teeth, so I'll scrap that idea.
Might give the polar night a try.

I have sensitive teeth cause i guess I over brush and I brush the enamel off my teeth :(
I was told to stop using whitening toothpaste and it was in the Pro Enamel I use, the dentist said its made for sensitive teeth and why they would add that in is beyond them...
Whitening does something to the enamel on your teeth which in turn makes them sensitive..
Why do manufacturers do these things. Take breakfast cereal for instance.
Start your day the right way with a bowl of healthy muesli, healthy yeh if you consider a sea worth of salt and a candy floss worth of suger in every spoonful healthy!!
It helps sell their products that's why.
