Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Treats for dogs with Kidney failure

Hi

Have jus found out that my young dog has kidney failure. She has just had fluid treatment and now is back home and on hills prescription diet. Does anyone have any homemade recipes for either meals or treats so I can make her time left with us a little more enjoyable than only eating the prescription diet.

Thanks

Sorry to hear what is happening so sad. Do you know what your dog is allowed to have and what she isn't ?
Perhaps if you find out we could come up with some ideas.
I would go for making liver cake but unfortunately I have no idea what she should eat and what not

I would be pretty wary as getting the balance of low salt, protein and phosphorous would be difficult.

Raw carrot is often a snack which many dogs like.

Burns does a dried mixer food (Burns Hypoallergenic Mixer) which should be okay for a dog in renal failure. Only dried bits of kibble so not sure how your dog would take to that.

Another option could be to buy tins of the renal dog food. Slice from the can and bake in a slow oven until dried before cutting into small tidbits.

My dog would not tolerate the renal diet as it's known for being low in palatability. I now give them a mix of Burns fish and brown rice and hypoallergenic mixer which they love. This was the advice given from the Burns helpline (they did say a renal diet would be preferable but, where a dog didn't eat this food, this was an option).

My dog was diagnosed 2 years ago and has done well on this diet with his blood results showing an improvement :)

I also give him fish oils since his diagnosis from here: http://www.mind1st.co.uk/Omega-3-Fatty-Acids-and-Canine-Renal-Failure.asp

HTH and so sorry to hear about this in a young dog. I despaired after my dogs diagnosis but he continues to do really well so try not to overly worry :)

sorry to hear, I had an older GSD with kidney failure, I looked at the prescription diet but it didn't seem high enough in protein.  Check out other foods and look for low phosphorus - google phosphorus content of dog foods and you may be surprised.  I had the added complication of a rice allergy, which made it more difficult.  My girl lasted about 18months and was nearly 14 when I lost her - her vet was gobsmacked at how well she did - and how long she lived.  I fed her on breast of lamb and chicken legs (inc skin) - basically fatty meat with low phosphorus content and added calcium (not tablets - but either tums or ground eggshell) as this inhibits the absorption of minerals ie phosphorus.  In a fatty meal add vit B, C, E and whole fish oil (not fish liver oil) - you can also feed boiled sweet potatoes (throw water away) - if rice not an issue then feed rice.

I also found that royal canin puppy food was rice free and low in phosphorus.

Dogs with kidney problems need adequate good quality (but low phosphorus) protein and high fat content diets.  I think some of the ordinary diets are far superior to the prescription ones - which tend to be far too low in protein.

Good luck for a long life for her

Hi

What is considered as a low level of phosphorus?

Cheers
