Hi  Someone wil be on soon who can help.  i take they are small breed.  Are they early or was mum fussy eating?

What size are the adults, is this a breed with very wide variance in the neonatal weights?

I would say the main thing you need to watch is that they do not chill/overheat, that they latch on properly, and that they suckle more frequently.

Keep popping them on all the time even if you have to wake them, and possibly have to support each one by hand so it can feed.

If they are not obviously gaining weight after the first day you may need to supplement, but you want to avoid them getting dependent on formula and not stimulating Mum enough to supply their needs, as nothing beats mothers milk, and especially vital is the colostrum in the first 3 days of life.

I would only add to keep the whelping box out of draughts, cover if neccessary ( in this hot weather it is easy to open windows without realising that the pups will chill).
Check for dehydration ( skin tenting) and ensure that any too weak to suck get held on hourly.
I had four 3 oz pups at the hottest time this year and still had to cover and give them a microwavable wheat bag when mum popped out.

will let you know how it all goes i am tube feeding on vets advice he said t/f or they will die being so small

Does your vet breed, and more importantly have experience of tiny toy breeds?  It is important for puppies survival that they get their fair share of colostrum, so you still need to try and get them to feed from Mum.

Yes, keep trying to get them to feed from Mum as well as topping up with tube. Weigh each day, as long as they are putting on most days, starting out smaller shouldn't be too much of a worry.

agree with what's been said, great advice... Are the smaller ones not suckling well or quite lethargic?  Has mum got plenty of milk?  Don't know what others think but I swear by nutri-drops (Col-late) for pups that are lethargic and need a boost.

I have a toy breed, and honestly go with what Barbara has said.  I do my utmost not to supplement.  My last litter all weighed between 2.5ozs and 2.75ozs and I just latched them on as often as possible, particularly important in the early hours after birth.

At this weight, I have never, ever found tubing successful.  May be ok in a stronger, larger breed, but, at this size it just doesn't seem to be so easy.  The last tiny tot I expected to lose, I refused to tube, and put her back with mum.  Once I got her latched on, she stuck there like a sucker.  At 12 weeks she went to a pet home as she was never going to be large enough to show, but she was a strong little tiddler.

I once tried to keep pups alive by tubing, only to ask the vet to PTS at 9 days, which was heartbreaking.  I honestly think that 2oz pups are just not strong enough in the first place.  Just how I feel, I fully realise that some folk will feel differently.

Hope everything is OK, just wanted to add a bit of encouragement, I have a alrger toy breed, but have still occassionally had pups jsut over 2 oz, and have managed to get them through, I find the biggest way to help is wiht the frequency of feeding, sometimes wiht the tiny tots 2 hourly simply is not enough as they are taking such tiny amounts, so I feed hourly for a day or two, whic often pick them up.  Also watch vigilantly for even the slightest sign of dehydration, and give  fluids asap (lectade, dioraltye, or the new royal canin one) as the can't process the foods if dehydrated.  Feeding hourly, 1 feed of solution and 1 feed of milk has frequently worked very well for me.  Also, to repeat what other posters have advised, make sure they are warm.  Good luck.
