Hi,

I am struggling on deciding what food to start the puppy I am keeping on. I have started to wean the litter on JWB puppy and they are doing very well on it but is it the best one in the long term for a working breed?
Like with anything all of the manufacturers make a case for their product being the best one....this then makes it very difficult to choose between them - there just seems to be so many?

Also - PaH have said that their own brand Wainwrights is the same as JWB but is it? Do I take advice on feeding from a teen doing a summer job - I think not!!

I am thinking I may change to Skinners F&T and see if the pup agrees with that??

How do you choose - is it mainly cost related, I obviously want to get the best one I can for the money but what is best!!

Thoughts please!!?

I raw feed, but skinners is one of the complete foods I'd consider, if I ever breed, to wean pups on to, although *personally* I wouldn't bother with the puppy food as I don't believe in life stage foods.  I've seen the puppy kibble for skinners, and it's tiny, like cat biscuits.

I know a few people with working dogs that feed skinners, and they all seem to do pretty well on it.  There's a specific mix with extra energy, for when you're working them, not that mine would ever need that, lazy layabouts that they are, lol.

I think it depends what you're looking for...what sort of work?

I feed my lot on Fish4dogs as it's high level of fish content, no grain (potato) and no additives.  They thrive on it - puppy food is 75% fish, adult is 55% fish, they are now doing a big breed puppy food which has bigger size kibble.  The current food is fine for tiny pups but I've ordered some of the new stuff for them as they get bigger.  They do a breeders club, puppy packs, and offer discount to breeders.  They also do fish treats, mostly just fish but some with small amount of rice.  My lot love them all.  I'm weaning two litters (border collies) onto it and they are in excellent health.  Prior to this I tried Orijin but the pups didn't get on with it, although the adults loved it (but felt they didn't have enough - you feed less)

Skinners is fine though also.  They also do a breeders club, but it's more complex than fish4dogs.  It's cheaper than F4dogs as well.

I have decided to go with CSJ - there is a stockist very near to me who also breeds the same breed as me. It is also very affordable.
I started to move the litter onto it last week and they are all doing great. No dodgy tums or anything. I will keep the pup that I am keeping on it and will recommend it to my purchasers.

I've heard good things about CSJ very affordable being the main one, and that dogs do very well on it.

My dogs are all fed on Arden Grange. We've previously used Skinners, which was comparable to James Wellbeloved, but must stay my dogs have never been as healthy looking or fit as they have been since the AG. it's more expensive than something like CSJ, but if it's not broke I won't be fixing it as they say. If money was an issue in the future, I'd probably try the CSJ, will be interested to hear how yours do on it.

Lots of good foods out there, just as many rubbish ones! A minefield!!!
