Health / My dogs ate sultanas. All my fault. Please shout at me!

I took my car for mot this morning. Left home at 9.45 and returned home at 11.45, chuffed to bits because it had passed. I was devastated to find my dogs with a half empty container and sultanas spread across the floor. I know that they are dangerous and keep them in a lidded container out of reach but I had totally forgotten that I had had them out. One of them must have jumped up onto the worktop and knocked the container onto the floor and the lid must have flown off. Had them both down at the vets by 12. They said they would have to admit them and give them an injection to make them sick and see what happened. One of my girls was mated two weeks ago. I mentioned this and the vet said that he wouldnt have thought anything would pass through the placenta at this stage?? Just heard that both girls have vomited and one had none whatsoever. The other, the possibly pregnant girl, had eaten all of them. They rang their poison advisors who suggested it was best to keep her in for 24 hours, on a drip and do some bloods, just to make sure everything is ok. I'm obiously worried sick about my lovely girl first and foremost but am also thinking of those possible pups. What a mess. I could kick myself. I remember casting my eyes aroound to make sure there was nothing they could get but missed the damned sultanas. Its ages since I bought any too. I feel so stupid. Do you think she will be ok?

There's no point in shouting at you, you're only human, and mistakes can, and will, happen.
I hope your mated girl is OK. Fingers and paws crossed for a positive outcome (((hugs)))

Thank-you Pedlee. Going to pick my other girl up soon so will ask how my other girl is. I think I wanted the vet to shout at me too but he just said these things happen. But they shouldnt! I am usually so careful and thank goodness I did know that these things are toxic. A friend was telling me how her dog loved chasing a grape around the kitchen floor before she ate it. I put her straight, of course, but not everyone is aware of this.

I'm not going to shout, going to give you a (((hug))) instead. Its so easily done, at least you took action straight away. I was talking to a member on another forum who had a similar incident with grapes. They left it until the dog showed symptoms until doing anything and the dog had kidney damage. The vet said this wouldn't have happened if she'd gone to the vets when it happened. Despite being told by countless members to take the dog to the vets straight away the owner thought she was doing best and saving a bit of money.
I'm sure your girl will be ok, don't beat yourself up, it happens to the best of people
> loved chasing a grape around the kitchen floor before she ate it. I put her straight, of course, but not everyone is aware of this
One of my old vets- you'll note I said old, openly admitted she would chuck raisins down to the dog out of cereal bars.

hopefully your girl will be fine, if she has regurgitated them, its unlikely much will have made it into her system.. fingers crossed
Oh you poor thing x don't beat yourself up,we all overlook things sometimes,no matter how careful we are.
I may be wrong but i believe i read in my 'book of the bitch' that the embryos are surprisingly safe from toxins and damage at this stage and the 'danger' time is between 3 and 5 weeks. Someone may correct me on this but i hope i am right to put your mind at rest.

You have my sympathy and you certainly don't need shouting at. How ever much we check they will always find the one thing we have forgotten or just can't see. Looked out of the window a few years ago to see both of them munching through daffodil bulbs - had never dug them up before or shown any interest since. Hope all is well

Hopefully she will be Ok, fingers x'd. I used to freely give handfuls of sultanas and raisins to my eldest two before all the info about them being dangerous came out.......we just lost the last one at 14 a month or so ago.

Thank-you all so much. It really helps. Just been round to my daughter's house for a hug!!! Picked my first girl up and the vet showed me blood results for other girl and they were normal. He wants to keep her in for 48 hours, on a drip, just be be sure. He said he asked the poison people about any harm to pups but they couldnt say. It was just a case of wait and see but he himself thought that maybe at this early stage, the kidneys wouldnt be developed yet. My first thought this morning was, how do I tell my waiting list what I have done to their pups. Will update when I get any news. Thank-you all again. this community is brill. Someone to reach out to in times like this.

Everything crossed -sounds good so far. Accidents can and do happen, no matter how careful we normally are. When I moved house 3 years ago I forgot to safely put away my Golden's epilepsy medication after packing, and my younger Golden and Malinois got hold of the tablets and ate a lot. We didn't know who had eaten them or how much so both had to go to the vets to have vomiting induced and the move had to be delayed. Both were fine thankfully.

Whoops, dont know what happened here but tried to pick up reply about Book of the Bitch and what I found in there. It says "The fertilized eggs are free in the uterus and uterine tube for up to 20 days after mating, and they are surprisingly safe and immune from any infections etc. which may occur to the bitch" My girls is 18 days from first mating! It also says that three and a half to five weeks is the time when any problems to affect the mum, including poisoning, is the time when the foetus would be most affected.
Phew, maybe all will be well. Good old Book of the Bitch too. Should have reached for that earlier but didnt think about it to be honest. thanks for reminding me.

Thank-you Bucksmum!!

Hi annieg3. Sorry to hear your story. Out of interest does your vet have staff present at the surgery all night to observe your girl. I was amazed when I went to vets with a friend's dog after he had eaten some of her horses medication. The vet wanted to keep him in, on a drip and observation. It turned out even when they have in-patients, there is no one on site at night and this appears to be the norm unless its a tier 3 hospital status practice. Aparently the dog had ripped the drip out & trashed the kennel in the night. When he was "under observation" !!!
Hope all goes well with your girl.

Hope your dogs are ok Annieg3 and I hope your puppies are free from any problems, being tucked away so much.
You shouldn't blame yourself, we've all left things about, its easily done. They are just opportunist thieves. My girls have had stuff off the tops that I've thought they'd never be able to get too over the years.
One day I came in from the garden and one was standing all 4 feet, on the hob, I still don't know how to this day how she got up there, but she was scared to jump down when she saw me, so when I got back in the house, I had to lift her off and get her down. She hasn't done it again, well not to my knowledge!

Thank-you Justine. Its awful not having my girl here. Her mum usually wants to play ball after tea but she just keeps looking for her daughter. Hope she is ok at the vets. I dont suppose they stay overnight with them? I suppose with all thats gone on she will hopefully sleep. Dont think I will.

Do you know, I didnt ask, what with all the worry and flurry. Wish I had asked now. I think I just assumed that they would have someone on standby.
Having said that, my daughter, many years ago, left her cat at a local vet who said they wanted to keep her under observation. My daughter assumed that meant she would be watched by someone all night. In the event, that didnt happen and she died. Youve got me worried now.

I'm sorry , I really didn't mean to worry you. I'm sure your girl will be fine. I know I was totally amazed when I learnt that most vets don't have anyone on site when they have in-patients, even a helper, just someone who could call vet/vn if needed. It's just a little bug of mine.!
hope all goes well for you.

No dont apologise. We need to be honest with each other on here. Our own experiences are important. We cant go about hiding the things that worry us. No problem. Pleased to hear your response.
Hope your girl is ok but please don't blame yourself, these things happen. My pap ate a sultana(she is so damn quick) I dropped a few weeks ago and I took her down the vet, fortunately they were able to make her vomit-but I was so cross with myself for letting it happen.
Fingers crossed for you.

Thank-you helenmd. Its so annoying isnt it. You are so damned careful then just one little oversight can cause all this misery.
I'm sure we have all wished to have a degree in hindsight :) most of us have had slip up's that have worried us silly!! Keeping everything crossed that all is well, think positive!!

I hope all is well with your girl. No matter how careful you are mistakes still happen and Im sure all of us have experienced a time like this so please be kind to yourself. A couple of years back I had left the house for an hour and when I came back I realised I had left a cupboard door open and my dogs had opened a couple of packs of paracetamol. I was in a state of panic and rushed them all to the vet and happily they were all fine. Im sure your girl will be too.

> vet showed me blood results for other girl and they were normal. He wants to keep her in for 48 hours, on a drip, just be be sure.
Bring her home, he's miking you for your concern. feel guilty and love her you'll do as you're told.
Save your money and bring your girl where she wants to be with you.
Big hugs to you all.
> Bring her home, he's miking you for your concern
It was their poison advisors who suggested it would be best to keep her in, just in case. I feel happier that she is there to be honest. My vets are very good and know how much my dogs mean to me. I have had a long standing relationship with them.
Has the poison advisor seen the dog. They also follow a standard. The bloods are ok. i would bring her home, you obviously miss her and care deeply about your girl and feel responsible for an accident.
if she is in pup being in a strange won't help her or possibly being on her own at night. my girls were very clingy and wanted their 'mummy'. if she is eating and drinking and gets excited when you visit her at the vet, I would say she is ok. Her tests are clear.
Glad she's doing ok and you have one home.

Just had a call from the vet. Her bloods were absolutely fine this afternoon and the fact that she also chewed her drip off means that we caught her just in time. Not necessary to keep her in another day. I can pick her up this afternoon. Phew!!! A big lesson learnt. Thank-you all for your support. God bless the book of the bitch!!!!

Thank goodness, what a relief x

Glad she is ok !
Hooray, I bet you are so relieved!!
> Hooray, I bet you are so relieved!!
Feel like I have been given a second chance. I suppose I will be ridiculously careful for a while. Been following her around. She'll be sick of me by bedtime. Thanks again.x
Fantastic news!! I'm so happy for you.God,it's enough of a worry let alone when they're in pup.
I hope your girl goes on to have a lovely, healthy litter xx

Thankyou bucksmum. Hopefully will find out in a couple of weeks. Fingers crossed.
Just wondered how your girls are doing.

Hi, sorry, been offline for a few days. The girl who ate the sultanas is fine. She is not quite as mischevious as usual but i am thinking that is because she may be pregnant. She does have spells of being her "normal" self but gets tired a bit more easily. She is having a scan on Monday next week so hoping to see heartbeats. I think I will stop worrying then. Fingers crossed. Thanks for asking.
Fingers crossed for her scan. Glad she's ok. You'll soon be busy if scan is good.

will let you know!!!

Just to update. My girl is fine and her scan showed moving blobs!! Just as a matter of interest, the receptionist at the vet said that, just a week after my problems, she went home and found her dog had got her make-up bag and eaten most of the contents. Never touched it before. She had lipstick on and eyeliner. lol. Not funny in the end as she had to take her in as an emergency, just like mine, to have the injection to make her sick. Dogs, who'd av em!!!
Congrats on the pups.
Sounds like the dog fancied a bit of slap. jsut shows you they get up to alsorts of mischief no matter careful you are. she should have offered to paint her nails and take her to the pub.
That's fantastic news.I often pop on this thread hoping to see if you've had any news.
I hope you have a easy whelping and a lovely healthy litter x
> she should have offered to paint her nails and take her to the pub.
lol, that was mentioned. She had perfect painted nails!!!
> I hope you have a easy whelping and a lovely healthy litter
Me too, fingers crossed. Thanks for your good wishes!!xx

Good news :) :)
