Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Rawhide chews for puppy??
- By jokelly [gb] Date 05.07.10 10:35 UTC
My older dogs all love to chew on rawhide bones/sticks but can't remember if they are ok for pups?

I get big chews for my pups, the retriever rolls. They're too big and tough for pup to break anything off but they're good for them just chomping on and trying to make soggy, super around teething time!  Just keep an eye on it though if the bigger dogs are about.

The other thing you could use is a puppy nylabone. But again, DO NOT let your bigger dogs get it, they will kill it instantly!! Actually mine wouldn't as they've never been impressed by nylabone, but I loaned my puppy nylabone to my big bruv with strict instructions not to let his adult dog get it. Put it in the crate with the puppy, I told him. His big dog killed it. How come he got to it, I asked. How could I stop him, he replied. Duuurrrrr, the thought of shutting crate door would have been good. Sorry, still a sore point - my pups loved it, his big dog killed it and he didn't replace it. Moral of story: never loan your beloved puppy kit to anyone else :-)

I use rawhide and also give it to my pups.  The vet did tell me to be careful as when they swallow it, it can swell in their tummy causing problems.  I also give my pups raw bones to gnaw on.  I make sure they only get large, unbreakable bones and I take them away after a day so as not to carry bacteria.  I wish I had started doing that years ago as my old girl won't touch bones and she has terrible teeth and breath whereas all my dogs which chew bones have beautiful gnashers and no stinky breath.

I'm not a fan of rawhide at all. It terrifies me. I have heard coutless stories of problems with rawhide, the most common is choking (happened to me) on slippery bits that slip down the throat and get stuck. I've also heard on 3 separate occasions... yes 3!!! Of dogs who've swallowed big bits, that have then caused partial blockage and rotted inside nearly killing the dog. The stuff makes me feel sick with worry when I see dogs with it. :-(

Same here Tanya, I've heard bad things about it, I think some of the imported stuff is worse, and can carry all sort of nasties.

Same here as well- Actually seen a dog that was rushed to the vet cause of rawhide being stuck- after seeing that I never give my crew rawhide...

Mmmmmmm.  Kind of what I thought.  Any good alternative ideas?  He is 11 weeks old and his last litter mate left yesterday.  He loves to chew and it is giving him something to do now he doesn't have another pup to play with.

My big girlies get the dried tripe sticks from PAH...they love them, but to be honest baby pups can be silly and try to swallow huge bits so I only give them things they cannot break bits off. Like large beef bones and ribs, I keep the big girlies away and throw them after a couple of hours being dragged round the puppy run.
If I want them to have something with a bit of chew but edible they get softer chews. With my large breed I find  rodeo sticks from Pedigree OK, they can bite smaller pieces off with no trouble. Never leave a pup alone though with any kind of chew.
My lot think Nylabone a compete waste of time and effort!!!!
I have quite a few Kongs and when pups are about I freeze them full of mushed up chicken (Cooked) and gravey. They love them, you can put almost anything in and freeze them. Just bung the small hole up (Outside) with a lump of plasticine/blue tak, fill with whatever and balance upright in the freezer, then remove the bung when frozen and give to the pups. as the contents de-frost they love to lick and chew at them.

I agree with Aileen.... a KONG... they are brilliant and so versatile. The initial expense can be a little bit of a shock if you've never seen them about, but can last for hours each time, depending on how much you want to squash in. They last for years (in most cases) and are (virtually) indestructable.

Another vote for kongs, having had dogs choking on rawhide chews I don't use them now. I've had the same kongs for well over 10 years and they've served several pups and adults and are still in use.

Rawhide terrifies me as well. I've seen too many dogs almost choke on it, and of course they can get blockages from it. Real bones from the butcher are great, as are Nylabones (if replaced regularly for large dogs) -and yes filled Kongs, again if it's not large dogs that can chew pieces off them. (My Dandy demolished even the largest black ones, and he was just a large Golden.) All my dogs get real bones, from the smallest (1.5 kg) to the biggest (40 kg.) :) Before I was able to get bones from a butcher I bought sterilised bones (sold in petshops) and all the dogs loved them.

> Rawhide

Dog chewing gum, only worse. Horrible, horrible stuff

Can anyone give me a link to large sterilised bones please, my lot love the bone part of the white filled bones, but I always have to push the filling out and throw it away as it always looks a bit dodgy to me.  I cant seem to find anything like this that isnt filled with gunk.  Thankyou
