Topic Other Boards / Foo / caravan vs campervan?

We are looking at changing our caravan for a motorhome now the kids have grown up. Just us two and the dog ofcourse. Has anyone made this transition and if so how did you get on?

We had a touring caravan years ago but when our children became too old to come with us but too young to leave alone at home, we sold it.  Now, years later, we have a motor home.  We think that it is brilliant, but there are disadvantages and advantages.  The main disadvantage of a motorhome over a caravan is that you obviously cannot tour around as easily from the camp site as you could if you had a towing car.  Of course, you could always get a 'Smart car' to tow behind the motorhome!  :)

The idea is not to stop in one place to long.  "wild camping" has great appeal as we never use camp site facilities anyway. I can feel a tour of Scotland coming on!

We never 'wild' camp......... I am too much of a 'wimp' to take the chance!!  :)

The only 2 disadvantages I found with a motorhome as opposed to a towed caravan is that 1) you have to  pack everything up when you need to pop to the nearest town for supplies which can be a bit annoying and 2) if it is a fairly large van you can be limited as to where you can park it around town etc but other than that I loved our motorhome. It tended to get more use than our caravan as we would use it for days out where it was really useful to make a cup of tea, cook a snack or just be there to have some relaxation.

I suppose another disadvantage with the motorhome is that you have to tax it and have it serviced etc as you would for any vehicle so the running costs are higher. I personally wouldn't go for a huge van again as it does limit where you can go in it - little tiny villages in Spain are out as are some of the very narrow country lanes.

I love my old VW.  Would suggest not getting to big a campervan as mentioned.  You can get a stand alone awning that you can leave up and drive off, but of course you couldn't leave anything to valuable in there.

This is what always put me off a motor home I must admit. I would love to have one but we had a caravan a few years ago and it got to the stage that we hardly used it. We put it on a site for the summer one year but by the time we got there on a Friday and home on a Sunday with all the other things that needed done over the weekend that then had to be done during the week instead, it became more of a chore than a pleasure. I do miss it though! We looked at hiring a motorhome for the summer but at £1000 per week I changed my mind!

I tax mine for just six months for the summer season.
