Topic Dog Boards / Health / Pregnant bitch with ear infection

I took my Cocker bitch to the vet last week as she had very grubby ears and was scratching at them a lot and I thought she may have had ear mites. The Vet said she didn't have mites and that she had an ear infection. She is 5 1/2 weeks pregnant and he said he was very limited to what he could prescribe and that if it hasn't cleared up then he couldn't give her anything else until after she has whelped. He gave a weeks course of antibiotics and said to clean with an ear cleaner twice daily but it hasn't seemed to have cleared up. It does seem to be irritating her a little bit and was wondering if Thornits would help? I did ask the vet if Thornits was O.K to use but he didn't seem to know what it was.

Thanks in advance

Funnily enough Sophie got a little ear infection at about the same time as your bitch when she was pregnant, I havent used Thornits but could you not ring the manufactures? It took a little time but with vigalence and constant washing Sophie's ear infection did clear up.

I had the same with Lexi when pregnant in 2006 (a breed where ear infections are uncommon) and the antibiotics that were safe to sue did not clear it completely and it returned with a vengeance when pups were weaned and cost me over £500 to finally get on top of, including ear canal flushing under anaesthetic.

Which ear cleaner are you currently using?  Could you ask your vet about an alternative one?

I have a boy that suffers with his ears.  My vet recently recommended TrizULTRA + Keto from Dermapet - it's fantastic and so much more effective at getting to the root of the problem as it contains a topical antifungal ingredient.  My vet has a dog with ear problems too so she really understands what works.

Although it's more effective it seems less 'acidic' and so is kinder for repeat washings/applications

HTH :)

Thanks everyone. I will try that ear cleaner Dogs a babe or might see if the vet can prescribe one that might be better than the one I am using at the moment.
