I am travelling to meet someone at the Holyhead ferry on Friday morning and thought might make a day of it with a couple of the dogs. Can anyone tell me where en route from A5(Telford) to Holyhead I might find a very quiet dog friendly beach to run the dogs on>
Thanks
Yes - Rhosneigr beach, on Anglesey - about 10 minutes off the A5, about 15 minutes before Holyhead. It's a really fantastic sandy beach, with dunes. And clean water. You can walk miles; it is very quiet (well, except for the occasional jet taking off/landing at RAF Valley which is alongisde the dunes) and it is very safe. Rhosneigr now also has a dog-friendly pub serving good, and good value, food - the Bay Hotel, owned by the Timpson family.
If this sounds what you're looking for, let me know and I'll give you precise instructions on best place to park etc.

Thank you Jemima
Sounds ideal. Would appreciate any specific directions. I get lost going anywhere without my sat nav.lol
Take the turn for Rhosneigr off the A55 (there's only one) - it's about a 10 minute drive from there. As you approach Rhosneigr, you'll see the Maelog Lake Hotel set back from the road on your left (sorry, got name wrong - the Bay Hotel was knocked down about 50 yrs ago!). Good food, good value and tables outside on a terrace. In fact, behind the hotel over the dunes is Broad Beach - also sandy and quiet, plenty of room for a run for the dogs, but not the vast expanse of beach you find on the other side of Rhosneigr.
As you come into Rhosneigr, bear right at the clock and head back out of the village on the A4080. You'll see the sea/curve of the bay on your left. After half a mile, the road dips down and bends round to the right. You'll see the caravan site on both left and right of you and on the left there's a track, signposted Golf Club. Take that and after a bumpy 100yds you can park up by the bailey bridge over the river at the end of the Valley runway (don't worry, it's well-fenced!). Don't walk over that bridge - instead walk left between the river and the caravan site and instead go over the footbridge and straight up into the dunes from there, parallel to the runway. You can walk for a long way in the dunes. It's usually very quiet, you are nowhere near any road so you can totally relax; dogs love it, masses of rabbits, and impossible to get lost because as you'll see if you look on Google Earth you are effectively sandwiched between RAF Valley and the sea. Whenever you want to, you can simply drop down to the beach/sea which is on the left and from there walk back. If you keep the dunes on your left, it will wend you back round to the footbridge in a circular walk, alongside the river. The river by where you've parked the car, should be unsalty enough to rinse off the dogs, partic if the tide is going out.
I would advise that there have been some reports of adders in the dunes. I've been walking dogs there for 20 years and never had one bitten (and mine really ransack the dunes looking for rabbits..), so it's not a big risk but I did speak to someone who lives there who says their dogs has been bitten twice in the past few years (and survived). Not sure how big your dogs are but there's a bigger risk to small dogs if they are bitten. I take piriton with me but please check with your vet to see what they recommend. There isn't a vet in Rhosneigr, but there are several on the Island - worth taking a number with you. You could, of course, just walk on the beach and not in the dunes, but don't worry too much - it's the most fantastic place to walk dogs!

hi i am 43 and spent many years in the Bay hotel so it wasnt knocked down 50 years ago! its sucjh a shame to see the woodenshacks/second homes built on where it was
as for cymyran beach it is as you say fantastic and so is the broad beach leading to and beyond lions rock
if you are meeting someone at Holyhead at the weekend then the planes do not fly unless its a special occasion same for bank holidays and night times
some areas of fencing alongside the airfiled are acsessable for dogs as i found out when my lab chased a rabbit onto the site!
i grew up in this village and spend a huge amount of time there now as my partners and my relatives still live there
do you live there jemima? if so you are really lucky !
i would also recommend the Glanneigr hotel for food and drink and also for friendly atmosphere.
My memory is that the Bay Hotel was already derelict when I was a child and I'm older than you.. memory obiously playing tricks! We used to run along the hotel wall at spring high tide, dodging the waves. My family has always had a house there - beach end of Glan-y-mor Rd for many years, and now at the top of the lane opposite Harrison Drive. I still go down 2 or 3 times a year and don't care if the weather is dreadful, although hoping for sunshine when we're there end of June. The dogs absolutely love it - just so excited when we're driving into the village. Shows how good it is given that they're lucky enough to have Salisbury Plain as their everyday walk.

my fella and i met in the bayhotel in 1982 and it was still open in 1983.in fact it was still open in 1986. i used to have a horse in the field next to the pub so after a long ride on the beach i would pop in for a coke! many times my friends and i used to swim in jack beans(the river that runs in front of the bay hotel) my parents owned Belvedere and my fella grew up in Ty Croes his dad is still there
i used to babysit for a family that owned a holiday home on Harrison drive. and my first proper job was at Bee Bees ice cream bar when it opened. Rhosneigr will always be my home and i love going back as often as my fellas job allows. i much prefer it when its stormy and love to walk on the beach with the wild waves crashing on the beach. in summer its a nightmare trying to get down the high street.
I am always struck by how incredibly quiet it is on the beaches, though, even if wonderful weather.
These pix are of my muttley crew at Rocky (as we call it) taken this year and last...
