Topic Dog Boards / Health / vaccination problem in 9 week old puppy
- By Dax-Fan [gb] Date 30.05.10 18:18 UTC
I sold an 8 week old very healthy, bouncy pup nearly 2 weeks ago.  He had seen my vet the day before he went off to his new home and was "certified" fit, healthy and normal, he didnt exhibit ANY problems in his time with me. His first week was wonderful - still the bouncy, happy chap that had left here. His new (devoted) owner was delighted.  She then took him for his first vaccination and he has had a severe reaction.  My new owner has described the vet as "rough" when he administered the injection and the puppy cried out in pain.  He has been a different puppy ever since, experiencing pain all over his shoulder/neck area, has had diarrhoea and lost a fair bit of body weight.  Luckily he lives close by and I have now visited him - he looks like a different pup.  He is thin, painful and very unhappy.  He has been back to the vet twice now - first time he received an anti-inflammatory injection (administered by a different gentler vet) without so much as a murmer.  2 days later he was still not right so went back again.  This time the vet is suggesting he maybe has "water on the brain".  I am devasted as is his poor "mum".  Has anyone on here experienced anything similar - what was the course of treatment?  what was the outcome?  I am going with the owner to visit the vet tomorrow morning and any advice anyone can offer would be greatfully received... I am sick with worry.  thanks

No but i'd be looking for a second opinion, maybe from your vets if you trust them and you say you're fairly local. All vets notes can be faxed across very easily..
Really hope it all works out for you, the 'new' mum and of course the pup...

I had my dog from the last litter jabbed at 10 weeks. I normally have the first one done and then the booster but this time I wanted to go totally homeopathic but bowed to pressure from the other half :( I do homeopathic as my boy who is 11 had a severe reaction on his 2nd booster and was left lame and since that time suffered from bad tums.

Took dog for jab, vet injected, blood shot through the air, puppy squealed. Took me 30 minutes to get home, pup cowering in the crate. Before going for jab was happy, healthy, eating etc, afterwards flinching and hiding away as if reacting to light. Every time I went in the room he cowered and squealed if you touched him and his skin felt hot, he was breathing rapidly, loose motions. Phoned vet who said it was not down to jab and had I sprayed polish near pup...... He then slept on and off for about 3 days and gradually symptoms improved. My vet refused to submit vaccine reaction form so I left the practice.

I consulted my homeopath who said it was classic vaccine reaction and she prescribed Thuja which I had already given but basically super strength, she said if that didn't work she would give him a remedy with opium in it. She said she is seeing more vaccine reactions, some of which make the dog aggressive but a lot which cause digestive issues. In my pup he was quite wary of things when before he had been confident.

I totally respect everyones right as to how they treat their animal but I will never again allow my dog to be vaccinated as I saw first hand how severe the reaction was, all my hard work with the pup went out the window, he has been hard work but worth every bit of it. He has just turned a year and I will titre test.

I am convinced that the reaction was caused by the vaccine.

Karen, what a terrible thing to happen.I've always had my dogs vaccinated as pups then not boostered but I don't think if I have another puppy I would have it vaccinated at all as I've seen and heard of too many adverse  reactions-maybe not straight after the jab but dogs having bad fits, heart attacks or collapsing within a few days/weeks of having a booster,it can't just be a coincidence.Years ago my puppy collapsed 6 days after her 2nd jab, fortunately she survived but it was never diagnosed as being a vaccine reaction by the vets.
I have to say I agree with everything on that Canine Health Concern website.

Firstly I'm so sorry to hear about the pup. A friend of mine had a pup badly vaccinated at 10 weeks old, it has left her with severe epilepsy and major health problems. She's still going at 5 years old, but neither she nor her owner has much of a life, so many medications to be given throughout the day. In her case the vet who vaccinated actually vaccinated into the head!!!!!  Unfortunately the owner really didn't push it at the time and there should have been major compensation, the treatment and pills over the years have cost an absolute fortune.

When I take my pups in for vaccination now I never let the vet inject into the neck, always into the side of the body (they do not have to go into the neck), and when I take my adult dogs for boosters I always place my hand over my dogs neck so injection is nearer shoulder and there is no risk of it going wrong ... plus I also choose which vet I use!

This doesn't help you at all, but sadly it does happen.  I can't offer any advice, certainly I would put it to them that maybe the vaccine was administered into the wrong place! Good luck.

What kind of  vet vaccinates in the head?  Is this vet still practicing?

I personally would take the pup to a specialist vet hospital and a good homeopath ASAP.

Tell them not to have the 2nd vaccine. You do not vaccinate an unhealthy animal.
Tell them to order the vet to report the adverse reaction, also talk to the head of practice/owner.
If the vet/practice refuses then contact the RCVS, report the vet/practice and contact the vaccine company.
If they are not comfy with the vet that did the vaccine refuse to see the vet see another or change practice.

Water on the brain can be due to the vaccine, ask to be referred to specialist, this is specialist and not to be treated by someone that is not experienced.
Contact Canine Health Concern you will receive help.

For the pup a very bland diet, under feeding is better than over feeding until stomach can handle the correct amount. Daily priobotic Protexin and Lacto-b the vet can prescribe also can be purchased online.

I've been through similar it can take a long road to recovery but it can be done but you need good experience people behind you a good vet, vet homeopath, people that have went through similar for tips and support.

I so hope little one recovers quickly.

Too right!!   Not long ago, the surgery that I use decided that the vet would do the health check and first vaccination, and a nurse would give the second jab.  I'm afraid that I am now insistent that a vet does both.

I have a tiny breed, and assumed that a vet nurse would have had experience in different sized puppies.  Unfortunately, she put the needle straight through the skin, and all the vaccine went down my hand.  I was not a happy bunny!

I'm sorry i cant offer any advice on water on the brain but my two had their first vaccines today and alls i can say is that i am very wary of the vets i use now as the ones i used with my previous dog Leo were terrible, constantly going from one vet to another as it was a large practice, some of them clearly couldnt care less either and i will never set foot in the place again

My new vets are great - they are the ones who had to put leo to sleep the vet and the nurse spent ages playing with the pups, they are lab owners too and the vet has made sure im in with her next time because she wants to see her "new boys"

I really hope the pup is ok xx
