Are you in the UK?  Do you mean legally or ethically? Private residence, rented accomodation or commercial kennels?

I'm not sure there is a legal limit in English law but it depends on your circumstances as above and, presumably, the standard of care you are offering.  Following successful prosecution of cruelty cases I believe a court can order a restriction on numbers but those would be case by case decisions

I know someone who has 14 dogs in her 3 bed-roomed house. One of her neighbours reported her, but when the local council came round, they were impressed by the state of the dogs, house and garden and said there was no restriction on the numbers she could have. Because other neighbours said the dogs were not noisey or causing a nuisance, no acton was taken except that they had a quiet word with the person who complained!

I always thought the number you could keep in a residential area was 6 - but I must be wrong and it must depend on how the dogs are kept and their general health and wellbeing. Three is plenty for me, I could not fit any more on my bed!

Lol, three is my limit too, maybe if I got rid of the OH there'd be space for 4?

My friend's in a council house with 8 small dogs and the council tried (not specially aimed at her) to limit the numbers of dogs allowed, and she kicked up the most tremendous fuss and got interviewed and everything and they dropped it in the end. Quite right too - our 3 dogs make FAR less noise overall than the single dog that lived next door to us back in London which was shut outside half the day and barked constantly.

Too right LucyDogs.

There is a poor little JRT up the road, left from very early morning until 9pm at night, and I feel so sorry when I hear it howling.  At least my dogs have company, and I think they make far less noise for that reason.
