I have found a (ugh) tick on one of my Standard Poodles and it was suggested that I use a topical treatment to treat all three that I mentioned. Does anyone have a recommendation?
Hi,
We use Advocate as we show abroad regularly with our dogs.
Not sure about Advocate, but certainly the likes of Frontline are only effective against ticks for a month. So re-application on a monthly basis is required, at least during the tick season, which in my area has become virtually year round. I think you have then to weight up what you're putting onto your dogs and how often!
It depends mainly on your circumstances and what you want it to do. Advocate does lungworm, fleas and some worms but not ticks. Frontline and effipro (same product, different manufacturer) does fleas and ticks. Advantix is great for repelling ticks and does fleas but is not suitable for use if there are cats in contact with the dogs. Practic is supposed to be more effective if the dogs swim daily and does fleas and ticks. Promeris duo is suppsoed to do fleas and ticks but i don't know much about how effective it is. You can buy scalibor collars that last 6 months and repel ticks very well, but kills fish so need to be removed before swimming.
All spot on products need to be done monthly to avoid ticks, although we are finding the tick burden so big down in the new forest that no product is 100% effective at the moment.
As far as i am aware there is no product that does all 3.
this TIC thing is growing everywhere i see...and don't forget the LYME disease issue with them ! another post has a tick remover suggested here i am going to order. France has FRONTLINE liquids...i use the droplet thing...breeder said when i asked bout the SPRAY version that droplet is better as spray goes eerywhere on fur not skin where it is needed. AND WATER removes the protection ...so if said pup or dog goes in water ? aha and POODLES (i had several, great dogs !) are PUDDLE dogs of Germanic water retrieving skills so will go into water if true to type easily ! my shepherd breed jumps in willingly if crossing a ditch i add...saw an australian shepherd last week DELIBERATELY jump into a pond of really mucky water ! not true to breed for that hey ! and white couloured...got VERY dirty indeed !
one of the GREAT things about poodles...is their hair ! just don't moult ! loved that myself ! easy to keep a clean house with those around ! and no allergies to dog hairs too ! sigh. easteenders had a huge poodle...saw it a few times onscreen...i shall regret my poodles when this thing moults twice a year !! LOL !!!
>AND WATER removes the protection
The manufacturers say that from 48 hours after application the dog can go swimming as normal and the protection will remain.
well practic brand seems to reading here above ...this frontline one i am using ? will ask again but was told by breeder it washes off...i would like one that does NOT wash off for sure ! a product that impregnates the skin and stays...must be something like that...practic ? must see if i can get that then now. not wasting money on frontline tubes if once said pup has jumped in ditch and lost protection hey !
>this frontline one i am using ? will ask again but was told by breeder it washes off.
The
Datasheet for Frontline Spot-on says :
Bathing or shampooing the animal up to one hour prior to treatment does not affect the efficacy of the product. Bathing/immersion in water within 2 days after application of the product and more frequent bathing than once a week should be avoided, as no study has been performed to investigate how this affects the efficacy of the product. " and "
Weekly bathing with a 2% chlorhexidine medicated shampoo did not affect efficacy against fleas during a 6 week long study."

the problem when one has had dogs before, is aversion to taking the same breed due to memories of the ones that died. me musing. why did i not take a colley or poodle again ? well too painful to see something that reminded me of my previous dogs ! strange things us humans hey. sigh. worth having another dog around when said dog is going to die i think therefore. makes it easier to bear. it has been YEARS since my colley. i took it badly. only a while between poodles. i must have become MORE SENSITVE as i got older ! LOL ! who would have thought it !! certainlty not obvious here hey the way i talk !! LOL ! sigh. poodles. had a black one and white one. 2. petra and pendita. funny. both had p names ! lol ! pendita was from 1001 dalmations i think name i liked. was into that film.
