- By karan [gb] Date 13.05.10 14:21 UTC
my sharpei is constantly chewing his feet and pads making his pads bleed and the fur on his feet are red, losing fur and look like scabs. he is on natures diet and sulphur in his water as he is hot blooded and scratches quite a lot. Other than that he is fine, its only his feet that we have a problem with.  Any suggestions greatfully recieved.Kind Regards

Could he be allergic to any of the ingredients in ND? Or maybe an allergy to grass or something? How long has he been doing this?

I think the first port of call should be your vet.

I'd be thinking on the allergy lines aswell, also grass/pollen.  Or mites.

Has he always done this?

You really need to try and break the itch scratch itch cycle.

Try dunking his paws in a very dilute solution of Hibscrub for a few days after each walk or grass outing.  You could put it in something like a cat litter tray for him to walk through.  If it's an allergy to grass or pollen this will certainly help and might give you a period of calm and an opportunity to do some further research.  I'd be concerned about secondary infection now too so you'll possibly need something like Fuciderm from the vet

Have you spoken to the vet yet?  Also, have you tried using a collar to stop him from chewing?

In fairness, he only seems to chew his feet in the warmer weather and the vet did suggest keeping him off the grass so I think maybe the lines of pollen, grass allergies is whats up with my boy.  Hes been on ND for a few weeks now and to be honest he has thrived on it,eyes, ears, skin so I dont want to take him off that. Its just his feet.  I think its a grass allergy.
I am going to try him with a few drops of Piriton and also the Hibscrub suggestion.   Many Thanks

Here's a link for Hibiscrub but our local Lloyds chemist stocks it too - perhaps you have one nearby?

Do check with your vet regarding Piriton - I use it for mine as directed - but it would be wise to clear it with your vet and to check the correct dosage for your boy.  Do also take some action on the secondary infection, if he's got to the stage of scabs it's likely he'll need some extra help to heal.

Once you are on top of the immediate problem you might want ask your vet about blood tests.  It would be good for you know exactly what the problem is as it sounds like misery for your dog.  There is a recent thread about allergy testing that could be worth a read.  Good luck
