Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / 7-8 week old puppy - Which food?
- By Louisejane [gb] Date 11.05.10 12:30 UTC
We are not new to dogs but we are to labs!  I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good food to feed our new puupy on please?  We're not collecting him for 3 weeks yet but I like to be prepared!

We used to foster small pups and I used to feed a mixture really of rice, scrambled egg, porridge, puupy meat and dried food but as it gets older, I would rather feed it food for dogs!! I'm just wondering if anyone has found a brand name that they really like for their dogs.

Thanks in advance!!  First time here so please be kind!!

Use what the breeder recommends, that is by far the best option. :) The breeder will (hopefully) have years of experience of rearing pups from birth to old age and will know what works well for their pups, and you will also avoid stomach upsets by sticking to the food the pup is already used to. Most breeders will give you enough food to get on with for a few days to a week or so. It can be so much hit and miss to find a food that suits a particular dog as they don't all do well on the same thing, so listening to the breeder's recommendations is both easiest and safest.

I would keep puppy on food that he is used to.  Most breeders feed decent food these days, and have already found from experience what works for their own dogs.

Hi Louisejane and welcome.  As others have said your breeders choice will be ideal to start with.  There's no reason though why you can't ask in advance what food they use - it'll be a chance for you do a bit of research.  I remember my breeder explaining exactly what she fed her dogs and why - it was a really informative discussion.

If it's a complete food, hopefully they'll give you a small bag to take away with you but you can also ask them where they source it from.  Most dog foods are much cheaper online and many of the big companies offer breeders discount so it may be worth asking your breeder to buy you a 15kg bag to bring home.  Your puppy will get through it quicker than you might expect!!

Whilst you're doing your preparation and research check with the breeder what puppy wormer she recommends and you can usually get that online too.  In fact a list of recommended stockists is really helpful for dog medicine, pet bedding, food, training aids etc.  It's often part of the puppy pack but it's easier to spend time reading before the pup comes home rather than after.  Less sleep deprivation for a start...  A very exciting time - good luck :)

This is a question you should be asking your breeder.  It is unwise to change a puppies diet, especially after the trauma of leaving mum, travelling in a car for possibly the first time and a new home.
By all means ask our advice when you know the answer.  In my opinion, no new puppy purchaser can ask me enough questions - answering is part and pacrel of the package.

I'd too go with the Breeders choice of food....................my new owners went away with vouchers for a free 4kg bag of food when they had paid a deposit at 5 1/2 weeks old.
I'm not sure i'd recommend buying in a big 15kg of food until you know that the puppy is still happy to eat that particular brand - with my 1st dog I did just that and when we got her home, she just didn't like it! As well as that, you may not feel that the brand of food is one you'd like to continue with either, so my advice is to get that smaller bag that the puppy is being fed now, and make a decision as to what to feed once you have your puppy home with you.

My Labs are fed Royal Canin if that helps ;-)

Another vote for the breeders choice. Leave the puppy on that for a few weeks at least, then if you really don't like it for whatever reason, change over very very gradually.

Im getting my lab pup in a week and a half i asked the breeder when i went to see them so mine will be on Royal Canin lab junior
