Topic Dog Boards / Showing / which class

Hi everybody

i was wondering whats the reasoning behind entering a dog that could be entered in puppy class or junior class in a higher class....

e.g. a dog that is eligible for junior is entered in post grad or any other higher class and NOT junior

e.g. a dog that is eligible for puppy is entered in junior or any other higher class and NOT puppy

i realise that a puppy entered in any other class (other than minor puppy or puppy ) being unbeaten by another puppy is then eligible to go in for the best puppy challenge (which i disagree with anyway) but what is the reasoning for entering in higher classes ?

Thoughts and musings please :p

barring any other scenario apart from owning one dog.
of an age permitting it to be entered in an "age" class .i.e. minor puppy, puppy, or junior.
why would any one enter their dog into a class any other than the relevant "age" class ?

edited to hopefully make clearer

Cant talk for anyone else, but we entered Englebert in Limit rather than Junior after he won his 1st ticket, even though he was only 12 months. Seemed fairer to the rest of Junior. We occassionally "move up" one dog if we have two both eligible for an "age class".

good answer Gwen :D
i hadnt thought of that possibility

but i was talking more about dogs that hadnt won any tickets or reserves
or the chance of having two dogs entered in one cage class

i should have made it much clearer

Sometimes Junior is a very tough class & some exhibitors may prefer to enter a class they perceive as being less competitive even if their dog is still eligible for Junior, specially if they are looking to win JW points. This is something we have often done -prior to her winning a CC, we entered our young bitch in Graduate quite a lot even though she was & still is eligible for Junior. I'm not sure why someone would avoid entering a puppy in a puppy class unless it was so "well-grown", they thought it would look better in a class with older exhibits :-)

just though of another reason. One of my 'puppy buyers' are entering the junior dog into something like maiden or special yearling at the club show in the hope there will be less competition, and so they will get inot the line up - as he is already qualified they are going in for a little creative entering! They had the older dog, who still has one win left before he is out of PG in Open at Birmingham, he didnt get anywhere!

I've thought of another one. People have been known to fill in the wrong class number in the entry form by accident :)

they may have a slightly overdone, or too ready a pup, so rather than stand among the other pups put it in among more mature junior dogs, --they might also be sick of coming up against dead certs, or a flyer so see more sense in avoiding it in its class,

I was thinking of showing my bc pup when she's old enough, but all this sounds so confusing! Are the rules all laid out somewhere to read, or do you pick all this up as you go along, from your breeder, etc.?

Most show entry forms have a section in that explains all the classes Lyn but on the whole I always enter the lowest class that my dogs are eligable for.:D Gillian
