pups now 6days old large breed....she will drink lactol mixed with water (doing it weak) she eat the morning she had pups she eat everything before having them and was a great eater, the frist 2 days after having the pups she eat but not much ,now she's turning her nose up at everything ,she seems week from no food ,she's not panting dont have a temp ,im tryin to feed her in her bed with pups , she was eating 800g before whelping now today i got 50g in her soaked with abit of meat in it but went though her ,what do i do ,is there anything i can give her to get her hunger back?

Have you had her checked over by the vet? She only has two puppies and may not require as much food as a bitch with a litter of 7 or 8. Mentioned elsewhere that after whelping my bitches can be fussy so keep them on a light diet for a few days of poached white fish in milk, and 1 slice of buttered wholemeal bread offered 4 x day, only 1 portion of fish.

Her insides will be feeling quite uncomfortable for a while - remember over the weeks of pregnancy they've steadily been squashed and pushed all over the place and are now getting back to their normal position - I remember the feeling well after having my own baby! So she needs light, easily digestible food - scrambled eggs or white fish for instance - and plenty of fluids. Also don't forget that her mouth will be quite sore from cleaning the pups when they were born, and topping and tailing them continually.
Having to be fed in her bed is normal - they usually don't want to leave their babies for an instant, and need to be forced outside to toilet.

What about trying tinned Chappie whitelilly? Thats quite smelly and easily digested. You could maybe heat it up which will make it more fragrant, or maybe cooking a chicken or some lamb see if that tempts her. You could try sardines if you need it to be really smelly.
Hope you can find something to get her interested. x

I had this with one of my girls, it is worrying. Try anything and everything! Scrambled egg with cheese in it, fresh human grade lamb mince cooked if preferred, naturediet, kibble, raw egg in goats milk. If I was you, I would try all of these as well as everyone else's suggestions as each bitch is different.

I had this, just keep offering her bits she'll eat when she's ready
it sometimes helps to moisten their dry food with warm boiled water,it makes it a bit more smelly as well. mine would eat only this and sardines in sunflower oil :-)
ive tried different meats and she not having it ? funny dog lol ,havnt tried fish so will do that, she does like eggs but that goes though her :( ,will be glad when she starts eating again ,but with only 3 pups to feed i know she's not going to need alot more then her normal amount ,she would drink pints of warm water with whelpi in it ,she has loads of milk the pups are so fat lol so thats not a worry for me ,the boy looks like hes going to pop lol
thanks will try eggs...fish...chappie x
lizanddogs i remember reading your post ,how long did it take your girl to start eating her puppy food again ?

You'd be surprised - ok perhaps not too much extra needed at the mo, but in a week or so, up to when they are weaned, she will eat for England! I have a toy breed which had 2 puppies 2 years ago, and she was eating 5 big meals a day to sustain her bodyweight (I weighed her each week to see if I needed to adjust the amount).
>but with only 3 pups to feed i know she's not going to need alot more then her normal amount

I forgot this - another thing to try is to smear tinned meat onto the pups, she should lick it off - have known this to work, but do not know if you would be able to get her to take enough this way. I also offer the food to her in the whelping box, place a small dish inbetween her front legs, and smear a little around the inside of her lips, or alternatively pieces of food on her front legs, she should also lick that off.
o right lol ive only had mainly big litters and would eat well from 2/3 weeks after whelp
dogsdinner thats what ive been doing ,puting it between her front legs and offering it her out my hand ,shes having none of it :( just made some fish nope! she not eat it ,done eggs too ,and truned away at that ,she will eat buthers tined meat on its own but it goes stright though her and i dont want to her to have bad runs and then start to get dehydrated ,pups are a week old tomorrow ,all my other girls have started to eat by day 5/6 and eat me out of house and home by 2/3 weeks!
il give her afew more days and if she still not eat il have to force feed her :( i hate doing this but i carnt see her starve , her milk isnt going to be very good if i carnt get her eating?

The other tinned meat to try which might not go straight through her is the Pedigree tinned for puppies, it would be a dense food suitable for puppies and would most probably suit a lactating bitch, and would be easy to roll into balls and pop into her mouth. Again if only a few pups she is most probably getting enough and is not hungry.
yes will try different meat, the thng is shes not eat anything yet today so she isnt getting anything ,her weight before mating was 36.6kg ,god its a worry when they dont eat :( x

I got my girl to ear naturediet warmed up in the microwave as it becomes more smelly then mash it up with a fork and add a bit of lactol or just as it is.
hi starryeyes ,i went and got some yesterday ,tried all differnt ways :( she dont want it x

It took aboyt 4-5 days in the end, I started tempting her with some cooked meats, and slowly mixing them in with the mushy biscuits, I left her a bowl full over night and by morning it'd gone

Hi white lilly, here are some of the things which l have resorted to over the years:- green raw tripe - this always seems to go down well, (no pun intended), grilled pork sausages, pilchards in tomato sauce, boiled liver, rump steak grilled or fried, a fishy whiskas, yes, whiskas! cat food seems to have a more delectable smell than dog food, tuna in sunflower oil. Too much milk will probably make her motions loose. Goats milk, well diluted, may be a better option. Good luck, l know how worrying it is when they will not eat.
1 week old tomorrow ,ive left it over night for her and shes not touched it :( ,thankyou x
ive not tried cat food i think thats the only thing left now to try LOL ,im not to worried about the milk she only has 1 scoop in half a pint and is very happy to drink it all in 1 go as long as its warm , back to the drawing board x
my girl was exactly the same, wouldnt eat a thing for around a week after giving birth to 3 pups. Tried everything
and she eventually started eating toast and puppy milk and tuna. Her pups are 4 weeks old now and i cant seem to fill her up, she is eating anything and everything. So dont worry to much she will start to eat soon.
> rump steak grilled or fried
> grilled pork sausages,
blimey can i come stay lol.
white lilly, have you tried pretending to eat something yourself?and share with her?
also too much food at once can be off putting so try very little scraps of the foods ur trying, let her get her appetite bk.
Hi White lilly, I once had a bitch with 7 pups do this so I gave her nutridrops and it worked a treat!! I gave her it every morning till she got her appetite back without the need for it.
Hope ths helps.
xx
ive tried it hun , her normal amount woud be 600g aday before mating ,im giving her 100g at a time and she still not eat it ,but yesterday she had 2 meals of about 60g each so fingers crossed we geting there x
danielle-k9.......
ive been thinking about giving her that! i have some ,how much did you give your girl? mine weighs around 34kg now looking at her ,she has lost so much weight :(
Cant remember but Im sure it has the dosage on the bottle, it worked within the hour. Gave her it for about a week.
Ive also used it on a 5 month old pup who was really fussy and was underweight, she would wolf down her meals after having a bit of that.
Hope your girl picks up bless her. xx

Hi, Whitelilly
My girl is doing the exact same thing as yours. Pups born on the Friday before yours. I'm not to worried though as the pups and Mum all seem content. My girls turned her nose up at everything and the other dogs think it's wonderful LOL she is eating teaspoonfuls of potted meat and spam :-) and the only dog related thing is Pedigree tinned puppy mashed down with soaked biscuits like I would do for the pups. Though I did catch her sneaking a couple of markies into her bed, so I know she won't starve. Oh and she has been hand fed in her box for the last week as well. LOL even my OH has been helping.
> mine weighs around 34kg now looking at her ,she has lost so much weight :-(
You have to remember they do look really skinny after having the pups but it doesn't mean they will fade away to nothing. Your girl will eat when she is ready. I know it is difficult to sit back and do nothing but sometimes thats what you need to do.
Anyway give her another week and you won't be able to keep her going on food especially as the pups grow bigger.
hi abbeypap i know your right lol ,ive seen her tounge this morning and its sore :( down the sides bless her no wonder she dont want to eat! i will keep up with the milk for her she loves that ,these 3 pups have more then doubled there birth weight so she has plenty of milk ,im leaving her to it now LOL x

Hi White lilly - if your girl has a sore tongue and is having difficulty eating could you not mix some puppy food in with it, like a very thin runny porridge?
She hasn't got thrush has she.
thats how ive been making it from day 1 lol and tryin to feed it with my hands (what a mess) she just dont want to eat? :( x
ive thought about that this morning(thrush) will take her to vets to see.

Do not know how they would treat a bitch with thrush that is feeding puppies, you would definitely need a vets' opinion for that. They do say that natural, organic yoghurt (live culture) is good for thrush, that would not hurt the pups I would think if you gave her some of that.

Hi, White lilly
Did you take your girl to the vets?
If its any cosolation my girl came out of her box this morning under her own steam and ate a dish of scrambled eggs followed by some of her dried food. :-)
yes shes been to vets and is ok , she will eat meat now so we geting there ,very slowly thaanks x

Glad to hear all is well.

Good news whitelilly that she is eating abit more x

Excellent news - aren't they a worry.
Good news. I had this for a few weeks after birth. I found that if I put the food actually in the whelping box under her nose, she ate it. It wasn't as if she didn't want to leave them because she was doing plenty of that. In and out like a jack in the box she was. It was simply competition. Silly, because the pups were generally comatose snoring their heads off but the fact that they were in the vicinity made her eat it.
She has always eaten better when other dogs have been about but I didn't think this would apply to her little pups, but it did:)
ok im slowly looseing the will to live :( weve had 1 good day of me feeding her in her box by hand thats it!!!!
i always feed in box ,pups are 12days old and for the last 2 days shes eat nothing and i mean nothing im going out my mind!! took her to the vets yesterday she fine ,vet did full chek on her
has this happend to any1 eles ? if so when did they start eating? she has lost so much weight ,i know shes only feeding 3 pups but she still needs to eat ,this is really upseting me ,im worried sick.

What did the vet say exactly?
No, mine are always feeding by now, could just try taking her out of the box to eat, most probably won't work, but if you have tried everything else it might work, and put the food on one of your plates, let her think that she is getting your dinner!!
The do loose weight the very good mums, as they put everything in to producing milk for pups.
well she didnt have a temp.her tum felt good when she has pooed its been fine , her milk bar is fine ,i spoke to him about her freeking out when she had 1st pup ,he seems to think this is the reason ? she is still very stressed about having them?
ive tried feeding her everywhere even outside with her sister ,in the kitchen with my other girl ,in the 12 days of having them shes only eat what she would in 1 day :( surley this isnt right? in all the litters ive have (not loads) ive never had this ,the worst i had she started to eat around day 6 ,i keep offering the food in her box but if i leave it she tips it up and i dont want pups laying in it ,not long before i can start weaning if her milk drys up but i need her to eat ,she will never be breed from again ,im at screeming pitch x

I do not know what to say White Lilly, in what way is she stressed, usually by now they have settled and are calm etc., is she away from the other dogs where it is quiet, no visitors to disturb her. It certainly does not sound normal to me, you need to keep an accurate record of the weight she is losing.
I think that you will have to begin to wean them early, and get her back to her normal position in the household. You can start to do
this when their eyes open and they begin to stand.
we have 2 living rooms ,she is in 1 of them and is very settled in there with the pups shes cleaning them feeding them comes out of box for a fuss and lays at the side of the box to sleep for anhour then stright back to them! the other dogs are out the way from her and pups ,she dont pant anymore but only when i offer her food like shes stressed? she just dont want to eat :( :( :(
she is drinking in her bed i give her lactol just 1 scoop in half pint and shes very happy to drink it ,she not have it in her food tho.

There is a tinned food very concentrated that is usually stocked at the vets, this can be heated and with added water is almost liquid, would she lap this if put in her milk? You would not need to get as much into her as normal food. Could even in desparation put it in a syringe. The other method is to buy a tinned puppy food (with all the extra nutrients) roll it into little balls, open her mouth put at the back of her throat, hold her jaws closed, stroke her throat and she should swallow - not ideal I know but would put your mind at rest that she has had food.
ive tried the vets tinned food wouldnt eat it ,but will try the puppy food in balls thanks x

best of luck, make sure the little balls are put far back in the throat, else she will spit it out. She will have to swallow.

Is she drinking? If so why not sneak food in by serving it as liquid, very liquid like one chicken breast cooked & liquidised in about a pint of water.
Would she like a nice long walk. I know by 2 weeks my girls are more than ready for a break and love to go on a walk. Maybe she is doing nothing to actually build an appetite up.
she is drinking nova thankfully but if i add anything to it she not drink! plus chicken gives her the runs :( ,shes eat 2spoons of puppy meat but omg she is trumping like made and it stinks!
i dont like to take them out yet as pups only 12 days old ,we have a big garden but dont want to be out with the dogs :( well she will be with the girls just not our boy.

Most probably a stupid idea, but wondering whether the stress and having pups has given her a gastric upset, rather like people get when nervous or under stress, it would affect the whole of the alimentary canal. Might be just worth mentioning to your vet and asking if he can give her something to settle her.
Plus she may need worming with the pups coming up to 14 days of age, it might all settle down once the worming is done in a few days.
