Topic Dog Boards / Health / Phantom pregnancy? and mammary lump
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 06.05.10 20:20 UTC
My Dogue de Bordeaux who is 2 3/4 year old has a lump in her in her back teat , I found it last tuesday night. I thought I'd leave it 2 days before I felt it again so I could tell if there was any difference in size. So on Thursday night I checked it again and was horrified to find it had doubled in size!
I booked her in to the vets on Friday and waited to see my preferred vet later in the day , upon examination she found that she was producing milk. So she prescribed Galastop to clear this up.
I think she may be having a phantom pregnancy as she has started to over clean her ten month old daughter , something she has never ever done.

The question I'm asking is if anyone has any experience of mammary tumours , She's back at the vets tomorrow morning to check to see if the lump has changed WHICH IT HASN'T ! and then we are going to decide when best to have her spayed and the lump removed.
I would appreciate advice from anyone who has had similar problems . I am worried sick that this lump has grown too quickly and I've got it into my head that I'm going to lose her.

Is there milk in the teat with the lump? I have a cat who after some pregnancies kept milk in ONE teat only, and unless it was emptied by me every month or so, would fill up so much it turned into a ump. Now she has kittens again (two years later) that same teat is full of milk but doesn't seem to work so I have to empty it twice a week as it turns into a lump so quickly. It's definitely just clear milk in it.
Also have a bitch who had a mammary tumour removed a year ago exactly. She's ten now and took best of breed at Crufts this year and became a Champion then, so it hasn't done her much harm! :)

Thank you for your reply. Yes there is milk in the teat , but I didn't want to prod around just incase I hurt her as the lump is quite big.
After the pups her teats went back great but this teat stayed the most droopy and was always wrinkly , it's now shiny as the lump has grown quite big within a week.
It's comforting to know that your bitch has had a tumour removed and is now fine.

I had a bitch coming into season, we were all ready to mate her for her second litter but a mammary that she had had bad mastitis in started coming up in a 'lump' - actually it was more hand shaped with 'fingers'.   Vets first reaction was that it was most likely a cyst so ABs were given, but 4 days later with Christmas a week away I got her in for a removal and spey.  I didn't wait for it to get very big as I couldn't risk that it would get really bad over the holidays.    She was fine then and is now 4 years later.

Thanks ,
I've just got back from the vets , she is booked in on Monday for spay and lump removal.
At least I'm a bit more settled now that I've heard others' dogs have overcome this.

Just an update on Fern ,
she has had her operations today , and now back at home.
Although she is very sad , and has drainage tubes which are leaking all over.
She hates the hood on but it's for the best incase she pulls the tubes out , maybe she'll feel a bit better tomorrow when she's had a good nights sleep.

I had a comfy collar for my girl (available within 24 hours from a well known auction site) it didn't freak her out as much as the lampshade and she used to use it as a pillow. I also had her in a t shirt so she couldn't reach her stitches, this might make her feel more normal than the lampshade. I also gave her Manuka honeu to promote healing, arnica and garlic in case of infection.
Hope she is feeling brighter soon, they are such a worry.

Thanks for that advice , I'm giving her the honey but I'll get some arnica and garlic as I've never used those before.

What a worry she has been when I got up this morning there was blood everywhere!
I was told it should come out the tubes but when I had a closer look it is leaking ( constant drip ) from the spay scar. Well I panicked and called the emergency vet , who was absolutely useless, he wouldn't give me an answer whether it is normal for bloody fluid to leak from a scar , all I got from him was to ring at 8:30 and make an appointment for today. Twice I had to ask if he was still on the line as I was getting no response to my questions!!
So I rang at 8:30 and got to speak to my normal vet who done the operation yesterday , she said he should of asked more questions about her before saying to bring her in.  And she has told me it is quite normal to leak from a scar after such a huge op. She also said she had to re open her up after she was bleeding quite heavily afterwards but couldn't find exactly where it was coming from and put it down to having to go in deep as the tumour was quite more extensive than first thought.
I now feel a bit more settled as she says if she is happy and wanting to eat ( which she is ) then she isn't concerned. If she gets weak and wobbly then I have to call and take her straight in.

I'm hoping she is right as I haven't seen a dog leak blood from a spay scar before.

Anyone else had this happen to them?

Hi Cani1,
My dogue had to be spayed last year after having a phantom pregnancy and having a mammory tumour. I was the same as you, worried sick and convinced I was going to lose her but she surprised me how she recovered. She bled from her spay stitches and it was everywhere, all over my carpet, door etc but my vet said it was because she was such a big dog with thick skin that it was hard to hold it together even with stitches. We decided to keep it clean and let it heal naturally without more stitches or staples. She was checked again by vet and made full recovery. Hope your dogue is feeling better now.

Hi pippadee
Thanks for that.
She is feeling a lot better in herself now. The bleeding has just about stopped , we are only finding the odd drip here and there.
She's in for a check up tomorrow and to get the drainage tube removed.
We are also just checking that it's clean , I would normally bathe any wounds with epsom salts , but were told not to do this until Friday when they had checked her over.

Hi just found this as was going to ask about mammary lumps and phantoms..my 12 year old westie  who had pups before we adopted her at 4 yrs had a mammary lump earlier this year and it was removed and was not a good one.  However vets had done x rays to make sure there was nothing else and said that if she gets anymore it may mean a masectomy.  She had a season at easter and I have discovered another lump last week, so obviously was devesated.  Took her to the vets (we go every week at the moment as she is being traeted for a bad flare up of her skin) and he suggested it may be a phantom due to the recent season.  She is behaving oddly, off her food (well certaintypes), not wnating to go out, sleeping, grumping, heavy breathing (occassional).  Vet has given her Galastop which she has once a day and I just wondered about other peoples experiences of dogs behaviour...I am hoping it is not another op required, or anyhtiong nasty that will keep coming back as we lost Flossie last year and I couldn't bear it again, so soon after.
Thanks
Fiona

If you look back to January of this year, you will find a post I started when my dog was diagnosed with a mammary tumour. She had the lump removed, and is absolutely fine. The vet just said to look out for any further lumps. but none found, touch wood. Hope everything turns out ok for your dog.

Hi Fiona
I've had Fern at the vets again  today for a check up. The vet is really pleased with her , although she had a lump grow on her neck two weeks ago it is not linked ( so the vet has told me ) and has now reduced a lot .
My vet wants to give her monthly checks for any re occurring lumps of the mammary , although he has also told me on the last two visits that if any more are to return he honestly wouldn't be too happy doing further surgery. I think Ferns tumour has been aggressive and and he is just being honest with us. Probably because I have expressed my feelings previous that I do not want my dog suffering for the rest of her life by being operated on every other month , as it has taken her a long time to recover from this operation.

I do hope your little westie will be okay , I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that once the Galastop has taken away the milk , that the lump you can feel has also gone. My Fern did not have the behaviour that your westie has , she was just acting her normal self , although I do know a lady who's lab was sleepy , out of breath and struggling on her walks , her dog is now fit and healthy nearly two years after surgery.
Please let us know how you get on at the vets.

Hi I'm sad to report that we lost my beloved Doodles today, the lumps had gone down ,but it seems there were other underlying issues which may have been related to the lump in February, she was my angel, shadow and constant

thanks all
