Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / chicken feed!
- By colliepam Date 02.05.10 22:20 UTC
Ive been feeding chicken wings ,and recently gave a few"chicken portions"including drumsticks.Someone has told me Ishouldnt,as drumsticks are weight bearing, and therefore stronger and more likely to splinter.Thoughts please!thanks!

I have fed chicken drumsticks with no problems at all :-) Poultry bones are different to other bones in that they are not so dense as they have small "holes" in them to reduce the weight and thus help enable birds to fly. I have also fed turkey drumsticks to my large dog which are considerably larger than chicken legs.

I avoid weight bearing bones of other species as they are very hard and some people have had problems with dogs breaking their teeth on such dense bones.

I often ask the butcher to half a whole chicken, then chop one of the halves into three. Tchi gets a half chicken and the smaller girls get a portion each. Never had any problems with this.

Chicken is fine as the bones are carrying very little weight even in mature, free ranging birds.  Most birds killed for human consumption will be relatively young, and the bones still quite soft.  Turkey drumsticks are very good too, although may be a couple of meals for smaller dogs.

When people discuss weight bearing bones, with regard to raw feeding, they are generally talking of the long bones of large mammals as these are truly 'weight bearing' bones.
