My bitch was due her second litter on 12th May but last Sunday 25th April she started panting heavily so I took her to the vet who assured me all was ok. He scanned her and we could see 5 live pups. During the early hours of Monday 26th morning she passed 3 pups. I did not see the pups for myself but there were 3 large patches of watery blood in her bedding. A further scan confirmed that there were 2 remaining live pups. The vet said she would have eaten the pups. I took her her home but within an hour she had passed one of the pups which was dead. I was totally gutted. 3 hours later the other was born and she was alive but died within minutes. I thought that was it but she has since gone on to pass 7 more pups, all but one were alive and fully formed but all have died within seconds. Does anybody know why this has happened? I have used the same sire as before. She last reared 8 pups so was surprised at the amount this time. There appeared to be nothing wrong with the pups and my bitch is healthy and fit. She last passed one at 4pm today. She is still panting and off her food so I think there may be another.
Can anybody give me any advice or reason as to why this has happened? Is it because if she carried full term she would have suffered heart problems?

I can't offer any answer but just wanted to say I am so sorry to hear your sad news x

Sorry to hear of your disappointment it must have been so very distressing and I hope your bitch is ok, for a dog to be 16 days before her time is very early I would have thought and would guess the pups were not far enough advanced to survive once born. It is equivalent of a human being born over two months before time and even with the equipment available a baby born that early would be very immature and require a lot of medical intervention.
So sorry to hear of your very distressing experience. There are many reasons why a bitch fails to go full term. If this was my bitch I would want a complete investigation and you need to discuss this fully with your Vet. You need to try to find the cause as you would not want something like this to occur again if it can be avoided. It is possible you may be asked to provide one of the dead puppies so it would be a good idea to be prepared and keep one. The body should be refrigerated but not frozen.
how hearbreaking for you and your girl ,i hope she is ok (((hugs))) ,maybe some blood tests and swobs be taken at the vets and see if anything comes back ,x
