I know you are all really fed up with this subject, only i would just like to ask what you think of Vet 2 Pet (Pinnacle). I have narrowed my choice down to Pet Plan, Pet Protect or Vet 2 Pet and would appreciate any feed back.

Jessie - I searched high and low for what I felt was the best policy and then insured my pup with Pinnacle/Vet2Pet although I have no experience of how good they are dealing with claims. I intend to move my older dog across to them when his policy comes up for renewal. To me they were the best all round value for the cover I wanted.

It is well worth trying your local vets as many of them now have their own animal health schemes and I can personally recommend this as an excellent option.

It is a little more expensive than going to an insurance company for your monthly premiums but the advantages include NO EXCESS so you don't have to worry about the routine consultations that cost 20 quid a time and are below the excess. Also the animal is covered for life long problems whereas many insurance companies will cancell cover after 12 months.

My vetinary practice also includes free nail clipping and yearly vaccination etc in the scheme.

After having a dog with an illness for 4yrs that eventually took his life it was reasurring to know that he always got the very best with no worries as to the cost of any treatment (he had six hundred pounds worth of barium x rays and 300 pounds of normal x rays just days before we accepted that no more could be done.)

Any way a bit long winded but theres an alternative suggestion :)

My friends Vet does this. It is one of the large Group practices with several branches around Bristol, and a hospital.

They do two levels of cover. the cheaper has lifetime cover, and an excess, and does not cover preventative care. the second option includes annual health checks, vaccsination, teeth worming the lot.

Her youngest one is with this scheme.

Sadly she lost one of her old girls today at 12 1/2. We knew she had malignant tumours, as two large ones had been removed previously, so it was a matter of time before things spread further. She went lame two days ago, and had a swollen leg. Xrays were somewhat inconclusive, but the mega painkilling injection had little effect, and the Lumph nodes were all swollen. She was such a lovely big girl, that it was decided not to allow her to wake up!

I am very sad, as she lay across my lap to the vets, managed a wag and a smile for her Mum when we left. Later that day I had her ashes on my lap on the journey home in the lovely box the pet Crematorium do.

She expected to loose her this year but it is very hard for me, let alone her owner, who only six weeks earlier lost a bright young male of 5 years old wtih liver cancer. She still has her companion who is a month younger and their first dog, and she has been touch and go for a while.

Pet Insurance with my local vet is £15 per month for a medium dog, and includes, flea treatment every 6 weeks if needed, worming and vaccinations. No excess, no quibble.

Her making a good age doesn't really seem to make it easier at all!

I think that pet protect comes out on top as the best all round insurance. I have read several in depth articles comparing pet insurance companies, and pet protect seems to be the best bet.
