- By Whistler [gb] Date 16.04.10 07:15 UTC
All went well with Whistlers op on Monday and Wed I took him back for post op - all fine.
Got home via a site visit where everyone made a fuss of him, back to the office (oh he was on the lead on site diggfers were moving). Buster collar on as well, back to the office an awful smell, no pooh I checked it wasnt Jake as he had been left in the office walked back into my office and there was a pile of pooph and a collapsed pup. I picked him up cleaned up quickly back to the vet in a hurry and he was totally out of it.

Thank goodness Finn (Vet) came in and his gums and inside of his moth were whiteish to grey and his heart was slowing, v. weak pulse.

I had to leave him there telling the girl "dont you let him die", I was weeping, they stuck him on a drip, I went home by the phone and cleaned the flat and ironed I could not sit still. Colin came home after phoning the vet and they said his colour was better - (OH though how could that be he's black Doh!!) I told him his gums ect. We went back about three hours later and he bounced out. We have a inline catheter fitted in case of night emergancies but this morning he has drunk and eaten enough to get his painkillers into him.

Ideas? I think the pain of the upset stomach sent him into shock? but he had been passing quite hard pooh since Monday night so no blockage? or dehydrated, I could not get him to eat or drink much but the office is cool not hot and he has only had lead walks.

I watched him like a hawk and we both took turns to watch him all night, he slapt, we didnt! I worried, they did bloods, potassiam mlevels ect and its all ok. Vet and assistants at a loss, they said they thought he was on his way out.

Im sure I lost 10lb last night!!

- By Sawheaties [gb] Date 16.04.10 10:16 UTC
Sending positive thoughts, they say dogs are good for you? most of the time they are BUT the worry when things go wrong!!

Is your breed suseptible to problems with anasethic? mine can have issues and I wonder how long the effects stay in the system? I suppose that goig through an operation of whatever size/length must be challenging to the system.

Hope things continue on an even keel, you get some sleep and no more weight loss!

- By Carrington Date 16.04.10 15:00 UTC
How frightening for you, what does the vet think caused it? Pain can make anything pass out if bad enough, very worrying.

No advice at all, I just hope that he has a full recovery, nice hot relaxing bath for you too.
- By annastasia [gb] Date 16.04.10 15:24 UTC

Fingers crossed, hope he's OK. Sorry, not been on for ages, what was op for if you don't mind me asking?

Nothing that he could have eaten and reacted to, or that could have bitten/ stung him? Is he on medication from the op?
- By JAY15 [gb] Date 16.04.10 22:33 UTC

Thoughts and prayers for a good outcome and speedy recovery for Whistler and {{{{Hugs}}}} for Yourselves
- By Whistler [gb] Date 19.04.10 07:52 UTC
He's alive and still kicking but he managed another collapse and so we over nighted him as well.

I collected him Saturday and he slept and slept and seems fine again. I will give the vet's their due he has had loads of tests, they repeated all the bloods, ect and still nothing.

He didnt eat again yesterday (sunday) but has been drinking regulalrly. I think (in my mind) its anesthetic but why did it slow his heart so much?

Iam overwhelmed by the posts this morning, I dont post at weekends because Ive got no computer at home. But thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support and I'll give him a hug from you all. Im not letting his bother his rear end at all so he's a bit mopey in his buster collar but Im hopeful that it was a blip.
The vet said hs heart beat was a bit low but strong and thet he would have expected to only see tat in a dog that exercises about 6 miles a day. I said he does about 8 miles walking a day so that explains that.
- By Roxylady Date 19.04.10 07:59 UTC
Wonderful news that he is still fighting in there, what a worry for you. Lets hope that the worst is over now and that he just keeps improving. As dog lovers our hearts go out to you both.
- By Ells-Bells [gb] Date 19.04.10 08:10 UTC
That's made my day - hope he continues to improve until he's back to full fitness.

I'm glad he's still with you and doing OK. :-D

Is he on any medications that link with the collapses?
- By JAY15 [gb] Date 19.04.10 12:54 UTC
Hope you have a smoother journey to recovery from here on in--it must have been a terrible time for you. As long as he is having a drink from time to time that's a big relief. Big hugs from all of us! xxx
- By mastifflover Date 19.04.10 13:54 UTC

> he managed another collapse

Oh no, how worrying for you :(

> he's a bit mopey in his buster collar but Im hopeful that it was a blip

Ahhh, bless him. Hope he's back to normal soon

xx
- By Whistler [gb] Date 19.04.10 14:16 UTC
No no medication and we stoped all Metacam in case it was that. All drips gone and his rear end has healed perfectly. But, Im still not taking his collar off until he stops heading for his nether regions if I take it off for a break.

Walking both dogs tonight for a quickie around the park. (OH in London with the Construction Minister!!!)
So Ive got Jake as well as his lordship.

I almost took him to bed Sunday but OH objected!!
- By Harley Date 19.04.10 17:30 UTC
Really pleased that he is home and on the mend :-)

So pleased the news is what we were all rooting for, I'm sure he will get lots of fuss during his convalescence; after it's over you will need to go away for a pampering weekend!! :)
- By JeanSW Date 19.04.10 20:55 UTC
As you can see, a lot of us have been worried over the weekend!  I do hope that things only move forward now.  Do let us all know how he goes.

I am so pleased things are looking up.
- By Whistler [gb] Date 20.04.10 07:13 UTC
He's ok now I hope had a nice walk around the park and I have his collar off, first dart at the nether regions and its back on again. He isnt eating much but now the invalid grub is gone its back to his usual and he's looking at it to ask if he gets a choice!! He looks funny with two "poodle legs" sahved for drips ect and a shaved poodle bum!! but on 30th its groomers so she may be able to start to even him up!!

Im sure it was all to do with anesthetic and pain killers, he had a patch on one front leg and when they soaked that off with surgical spirit Im sure some got left in his feet hair!! I may never know.

Now Im waiting for Pet plan to assist with the £1500 we have paid on this one!!

Once again many thanks for your comments and Im still watching him like a hawk!
