anyone know if there is import tax on books? i ordered some books from usa and have just been sent a whacking import bill from fedex!!!! :(

I think there is an import tax on most things that cost more than £30 or something. Not sure on the specifics though sorry

Books are zero rated ie exempt from VAT so you shouldn't be charged at 17.5% BUT you can still be charged import duty on the price you paid for insurance and postage costs.  Did your seller declare the contents as books?

Some delivery companies also charge additional handling fees

You could try finding the answer at HM Revenue & Customs BUT I looked a while ago for similar information and couldn't find it!!  Good luck

If you have the time and inclination, you should be able to find the answer here TARIC. You need to find the TARIC code for books first :)
