Topic Dog Boards / Health / Health tests for cocker spaniels

I'm sure you're aware that here in Ireland, many breeders dont do any genetic testing on their dogs. I've recently acquired a smashing cocker spaniel pup for showing and if she is successful, I would like to try and let her have one litter of pups at 3 years old. It is literally years away but I would like to carry out the genetic testing for pra etc. Its my intention to hip score at 2. So I'm just wondering the costs that are associated with these tests in the Uk? I have a rescue german shepherd who had poor hips at 8 weeks and I Never want to be part of producing poorly pups for profit. My OH reckons that I wont consider anyone worthy of a pup!!

I have done the optigen test for pra, I used a 20/20 clinic & also ordered my test online as you get 25% discount I think it cost around £90. Can't help with hip scoring.

Hip scoring would cost you whatever the vet charges for GA and plates plus the BVA charge which is listed here: http://www.bva.co.uk/canine_health_schemes/Hip_Scheme.aspx

There is also a DNA test for kidneys http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/1970 and the blood sample taken for the PRA http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/1969 and this can be done at the same time.

What is a 20/20 clinic, I have a friend wanting to do a pra test but cannot find a clinic in the near future.

Go on the optigen website and look at clinic.  Think there's one the first week in May.

How do you get yur results on the KC website do you have to advise them?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 16.04.10 00:26 UTC
Depends if it has become a KC scheme which your breed has to ask for.

Our results started being sent direct to Kennel club July 2009 about 9 months after the test became available.  Those of us with earlier tested dogs had to send the copies of the test results into the Kennel club to get them listed.

This list http://www.optigen.com/opt9_ogregistryonline.html shows who they report to, so if it doesn't say our KC under your breed you need to get the breed club onto it.

Thanks for that Brainless, only had the results back a few weeks so maybe it takes a while to go on.  Took quite a while for my youngests gonioscopy results to get on the KC site.

Looking at the reporting page http://www.optigen.com/opt9_ogregistryonline.html it doesn't show your breeds results as going direct to the KC?????

English Cocker Spaniel results from Optigen are sent direct to the KC, it's the Antagene FN results that aren't, but once you get your certificate through, you can scan it and e-mail it to them.  By the time my Optigen certificate arrived in the post, the KC already had my results and were posted on their website, if you type in your dogs name here: http://www.the-kennel-club.org.uk/services/public/health/search/Default.aspx  you can also check to see if your dogs parents have been tested, not all results are posted as it's only been the past few years that the results were sent direct, if they were tested before this, then it was up to the owner to send copies of the certificates.

Also if you keep an eye on the Optigen website, they do discount codes every so often, so you can order your test direct and still get the 25% discount, Antagene usually do a discount code around the same time.
