Topic Dog Boards / Health / Is it incontinence?

Tessa is nearly 2 now and was spayed last month. She is house trained and never had any accident for over a year. This week though, I've found puddles by the back door on a few occasions. I know it was after "long" stretches of time with her having to hold herself, but nothing unusual for her. I've usually found them in the morning. I'm concerned because I know that she can hold herself that long as she's been doing it fine for a while. Now, I've just come back from work and again, a big puddle (and it was cold). Nothing else has changed in our routine. It's not like she's dripping, it's a proper big puddle and she seems to deliberately go to do it in the kitchen by the back door, so it doesn't seem like something uncontrollable- I'd think? She also did one in front of me the other when I got back from the shops, she was all excited (and maybe I was doing too much too) and she started weeing, I said "no" but she couldn't stop and carried on. It's like she can't hold herself as much? When I take her out for her walk, she's hardly out of the door that she squats whereas she used to be a bit more "picky" as to where she does it!
I'm now wondering about her water intake, but it's hard to see with 2 dogs and they've been having dog chews lately which I know tend to make them thirsty anyway.
Should I worry? Is this possibly incontinence starting? Have you heard of bitches reversing in their house training like this?

I have a spayed bitch with incontinence ......but she drips or, in a deep sleep, can leave a cup full on her bed.

Have you ruled out infection of kidney or bladder, diabetes ( melitis or insipidus)?
I would get the vet to eliminate these conditions first - then try Propalin the drug which acts on the bladder to give tighter control - or perhaps try Oestrogen with or without the Propalin.

You should discuss all with your vet.

Thanks. I'm just wondering because I know she's a little missy at times. She seems to always find something to get some attention! She was a little terror of a puppy who used to dig holes in m walls and destroy my door frames. She was long and slow to house train too. I know she plays me up at times, she went off her food after her spay even though the vet couldn't see anything wrong with her and she even had additional painkillers. I know she plays me up at times and will fake limping or start shaking if I go "oh poor baby, what's up!". That's why I can't help wondering whether it's another one of her tricks. But God knows what she gets out of that one though.
I'll speak to my vet next week as she's due for a weight check.

My GSD became incontinent after spaying and all the medications for this problem really made her ill so had to be stopped. It was something I had to live with for a long time, although found she went through good dry spells and then bad wet times. It has gradually improved and now she is 8 and completely normal and dry, going many hours between wees. It was no good scolding her as she was very upset every time she wet indoors but just couldn't help it. There are medications that are supposed to stop this problem so maybe your dog will be able to take them with none of the  side effects that caused my dog the problems. Do speak to your vet as I understand it is quite common after spaying.

Totally agree.  I do think that sometimes we can worry a dog too much by scolding, and can sometimes exacerbate the situation.  Interesting that your girl is now 8 and doing fine.  That is great.

My gsd bitch who is now 3 (spayed at 18 months) is incontinent monthly! (every four weeks or so she leaks only for one day!) Vet has checked her urine and its fine so she is now on Incurin as we think its spay incontinence.  Meds now down to twice a week and eventually only weekly.
