I was wondering if you could tell me the costs and profits invovled in dog breeding and whether it is a worth while company to run. As i need this information for my small business class where i have to write budget for a company of my choice.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

Hi Lisa
How long is a piece of string? <g>
If dog breeding is done responsibly then the breeder "may" if very lucky break even
Costs Include
Purchase of pup
Feeding & Training costs
Veterinary costs
Health testing for specific breeds (varies)
Showing or visiting shows to view potential stud dogs
Travelling to visit potential stud dogs
cost of stud fee
Extras for bitch during pregnancy
Equipment (whelping box, heat lamps, thermometers etc)
Vets costs - from just checking bitch after whelping to cost of out of hours caesarian
Food for pups and probably some kind of fencing to keep them in certain area
phone calls to potential new owners and advertising if they are not already lined up
Vaccination/Tattooing/Microchipping/Puppy eye examinations if relevant to brred
Profit
The joy of having dogs - so yes, the profit does outweigh the cost but not in monetary terms <g>
These are just a few off the top of my head

Maybe Leigh could help here ....I seem to remember , just after I joined Champdogs ..about a year ago , someone posted a link to some pages which detailed the cost of breeding and also compared the costs to *different* types of breeders ..ie Accidental , Professional etc etc ..it made for excellent reading and would sound to be exactly what was needed here.
