Does anyone have any ideas how I can soundproof my party wall please?I have very noisy neighbours, would rather not confront them, anyway,a lot of it is normal living, kids squealing and running about(till one a m sigh)parties, karaoke(groan),music, dogs barking and howling when they go
out, well,im sure you get the idea! The walls are obviously very thin,as i can also hear talking, tho not what theyre saying, thank God!It wouldnt be so bad if theyd keep it down after ten,but after two years,it aint going to happen! So i thought of this.any d I y ideas would have to be easy!and cheap!I think its mainly the alcoves both sides of the chimney breast that would need doing.Unfortunatly,I like peace and quiet,I dont make much noise myself as I live on my own,but they must have heard my dogs bark now and again,so they must know the walls are thin.any ideas at all will be very welcome, thanks in advance!

The only thing I can think of is to put a false wall in front of the existing one and fill the cavity with insulation. You would have to build a stud partition and face it with plasterboard. It depends how good you are at DIY as to the cost but it wouldn't be really cheap and the boards would need to be plastered. You could use wooden tongue and groove instead of plaster board but wood isn't cheap eithrt but you would save the cost of plastering as you could then oil and polish the boards or varnish them.
Proper sound proofing insulation is available but at a cost. If the above is too expensive an alternative may be to put shelves up on those walls and fill them with books which should deaden the noise a bit.
Could you try combining a couple of Harley's sensible suggestions? See whether you can get some insulation up on the alcove walls and then finish it off with a fitted bookcase/shelves. That way your facing material could be something cheap and cheerful like painted chipboard as it will be hidden behind books anyway. It will be less expensive overall, but also it won't have cost you a fortune if it doesn't work very well.
It's worth Googling for ideas as there are a lot of suggestions and plans available for the diy er.
Here is one site that offers proper kits.

The tongue and groove panelling boards are not expensive (we bought some to finish a bit of wall for a Friend where a small chimney was removed, as that is what is on the rest of that wall.
So you could batten the alcoves and fill with insulation nd put the panelling on top.
The book shelves could come in front of that too for even more.
very good ideas.!yes im sure i could manage something like that,i love the bookcase idea!thankyou,i will be so pleased to deaden the racket a bit!thanks everyone!

moving is obv the best idea, your life will be miserable otherwise. i agree that it is possible to sound proof the walls but you obv loose several inches of space as well. using ear plugs at night might help you sleep

Sometimes better the devil you know, is better than the devil you don't.
Moving could mean worse neighbour problems.
have thought about moving many times in the past two years(next doors is rented)but im retired and single, only have state pension, not very brave or clever, either.could only afford another terrace,so might end up in a similar position if i do move!I basically want a caravan in a field, just me and my critturs, bliss! To be honest though, ive never really liked it here much,i had to find somewhere quick as i was forced out of our marital home by my ex,been here ten years now.Its not that bad, really, shouldnt moan, kids live close by,and im kept busy with grandkids and various doggy activities, its just a bit of a devil when people wont allow you to sleep!Idid buy earplugs when they first moved in,and regularly woke me up talking to friends on the doorstep at one and two am,for ages, and at the time i had to be up at 3 30 am for work.Might try them again.Well,i could go on-and on-!So thats why i thought id look into soundproofing.Bedroom first i think!thanks for replies!
