Topic Dog Boards / General / Dog Warden and scnning for Microchip
- By kenya [gb] Date 01.04.10 07:22 UTC
First of all my Border Terrier is home after 24hours, secondly I'm so annonyed, when I called the Dog Warden yest at 1.45pm, she she said we had a Terrier found last night around 5pm ish wandering looking lost and a gentleman coaxed her into his house as the weather was so dreadful.
He then called the Dog Warden, she asked if my BT had a collar/id tag on, which she doesnt wear, as Ive had a terrier get stuck in a fence before.
Anyhow the Warden took the man's details and said, if I hear of anyone losing a dog, I'll give them your details.
If she had scanned my bitch on Tuesday night, she could have been home with us, instead of my crying all night, thinking she was lying or lost outside it that terrible weather.
The Dog warden gave me a lecture that Orla should have a collar/id tag on, but then again she should have scanned her!
Am I right to be annonyed, or how long would have my dog been with the man before she decided to scan her?

Dog wardens aren't usually a 24-hour service, so anything outside office hours won't get dealt with till the next day at the earliest.

Very glad she was safe and that you've got her back safely - you must have been worried sick.

Did you have to pay to get her back?

This happened to a friend of mines jack russell , they did not scan the dog for 3 days so she had to pay 3 days of kenneling fees,.
Does make you wonder if they do this on purpose.

Peanuts, Orla stayed with the man who found her, but 24hrs she had been with him without her being scanned by the Dog warden.
Have bought the Gentleman some nice Wine and choc's!

Whats the point of getting them chipped, if they don'y bother scanning them?

Yes I agree.  I only ever lost a dog once.  She was with a person who (supposedly) was going to mate her.  She allowed my bitch outside, and phoned me to say that  she had run off!  (No I never used this stud again!)

My bitch ran into an old man's garden.  She willingly let him pick her up.  He saw her disc saying she was identichipped, and took her to the nearest small animal vet.  A good 20 minute drive away, so thank god for caring people.  Within minutes I received a phone call from the vet (who had scanned.)

I was very lucky.  But, in your situation, I would still be mad that I hadn't been contacted sooner.

> The Dog warden gave me a lecture that Orla should have a collar/id tag on,

Talking to a neighbour last week and she was bemoaning the fact that her JR type terrier -not chipped - has got out and subsequently been picked up by dog warden and taken to 'strays' kennel. Owner had phoned round and located dog but was most annoyed that she was fined £60 for no tag on collar. First fine I have ever heard of!

PS glad to hear Orla is now safe home

I'm glad you have her home safe and well and she was cared for while missing.  It is however an offence to have a dog loose without wearing a collar and ID tag...the dog warden is within their right to fine up to £5000 for this.

Unless they have started to all carry scanners around I know in my area the dog wardens were unable to scan until the dogs reached the holding kennels - this may have changed now.

If the dog warden was not working and took the call in the evening then they would have gone out the next morning to scan the dog and return him/her to their rightful owner.  Dog Wardens are paid to work 9 - 5 not 24/7 so cannot always help overnight and in some counties not at weekends.

If the dog escaped from the house it's understandable that it did not have a collar on but don't know if this is what happened.  Also by the sounds of it the DW saw the dog the next morning and still didn't scan.  I had one of my dogs missing for 2 weeks who eventually found her way back to my parents.  We had her scanned afterwards and no chip was found anywhere in the body!! Microchip company weren't even interested.

It is the law though that a dog must wear a collar with tag (with yoru name and adress on it)when out.

they ahve charged per day if yoru dog is picked up by dog warden here for years.

Does concnetrate many owners minds into fixing that fence for less than the charge to get the dog back.

But on the flip side, it is the law that a dog has to have a collar and tag. :-)

I've brought two lost dogs home without collars, with a collar and tag it would have been a very quick phone call to the owner. Without a tag I had to look after the dogs until someone could come out to collect them, sometimes that can be overnight, meaning the finder has to feed the dog and care for it (we finders do that out of the goodness of our hearts) Then the warden, has to use petrol to get to our houses or we have to do that, again feed and look after a dog until it is checked with a chip machine, then keep a dog until the owner comes for collection or the dog is delivered. It's all inconvienient to people and although it does not cost £60 to do these things IMO it is a fair enough fine, it pays the wages of the warden or rescue service.

I found a lost dog in the forest - rang the number on the tag and the owner turned up within the hour to collect him. My tags all  have the wording "Scan Me" on them as well as the contact details and wear two tags as they have lost tags before whilst out and about.

Really pleased that you have your dog back - I have been in the same position having lost my dog when some numpty let off a firework at 10pm on a summer's evening and my dog bolted in blind panic. A dreadful situation to be in and so pleased that you have had a happy reunion :-)

So glad you have her back safe :)

I found a stray dog a few months ago, no collar looked as though he had be roaming around for days, phoned the dog warden and she came with a scanner to see if he was chipped, he had not been chipped so she took him back to the her kennels. :(

Also a friend of a friend lost his WHWT again no chip, 24 hours later he traced the dog back at the dog warden, and paid a £90 fine!

They also charge for overnight kenneling here. A lady who used to live near me had a crossbred dog which was a terror for escaping from the garden. Her husband would not fix the fence and she couldn't do it because she was not well. Shortly after I got to know her the husband walked out on the family. so she saved up and just about had enough money to repair the fence, but before she could a child visiting her house let the dog out unsupervised and he was off! The resulting charge levied on her took all the money she had saved to repair the fence. She was so upset. Anyway another friend and I went round and fixed the fence for her, with some old fencing panels we got from some people who had decided to get rid of their fencing and replace it with a small wall.

a collar/id tag on, which she doesnt wear, as Ive had a terrier get stuck in a fence before.
How did that happen?

I'm glad that you are reunited with your dog, still I think it's better to buy a safe collar with a tag attached. Or have you considered putting a harness on him?

Glad you got her back :-)
As a slight aside, a friend recently looked at an advert for a Dog Warden job - the qualifications were "be able to organise your own working day and coffee breaks"!  Yes, seriously this was the only qualification required.
As someone has said, dog wardens are pretty 9-5 jobs. But, also out of interest, the highways authority and police are not required to scan dogs found on the roads, knocked down. There's a campaign at the moment to get vets to scan dogs new to their practice I strongly believe this campaign should also include the likes of the highways authority, police and dog wardens.
- By STARRYEYES Date 01.04.10 13:22 UTC
I was told when I had my dogs scanned to have it checked periodicallly to make sure it still registered.

I spoke to someone at crufts 2 years ago regarding vets and DW scanning dogs reguarily as she was asking people to sign a petition to encourage this.Obviously it is still a problem.
What is the point of encouraging people to microchip thier dogs if the people with the equipment to scan dont use it.
Agree with you trialist.

So glad you have your dog back safe and sound.

One of my terriers collar got stuck on a bit of wire when going through a fence, If I hadnt seen her, she could have hanged herself.

Glad to hear Orla is back with you safe and sound Fiona.  None of my dogs large or small have ever worn collars around the house or garden but they do have them with id tags on if we are travelling to shows etc

My first LM always wore a collar & tag with 2 phone numbers on it in case I was uncontactable on one.  He was trotting ahead on a walk one morning, Joe Public thought he was a lost dog so took him home called the Dundee Dog Warden who duly picked him up at 9.30am.   At that point I was running around trying to find him, they didn't take him back to the kennels until 2 hours later and then when we eventually got through by phone, the kennel maid argued until she was blue in the face that 'Yes they did have a Munsterlander but he only had one phone number on his tag' at that point she was asked how many Munsterlanders they had in their care and to go recheck.  But not one word of an apology nor an explanation as to why he was shut in the dog wardens van for 2 hours or why no-one had bothered trying to contact me.   But I still had to pay to get him back!

There is a campaign going on for this at the moment being run by a lady called Nikki Powditch she is on the Dog Theft Action stand every year at Crufts. She calls the campaign Jesters Law, as her dog was run over and killed on the road. By the time she found this out the highways authority had sent her dog to be cremated and his ashes mixed with other types of animal being cremated to make rose fertiliser.

I can't find her email address at the moment but if you contact Maragret at Dog Theft Action she will pass you on to Nikki.

Our local dog warden brings dogs round to me if they can't find a chip for a 2nd person to check more than once they've said unchipped and I've found one.
