Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / number of matings - is 4 too many?
- By scarlet245 [gb] Date 31.03.10 06:46 UTC
hi everyone the stud dog i have been using is going back up North later today. we have mated the dogs over the last 3 day's. the stud dog owner phoned last night and asked if i wanted to try again before he go's home? we have had 3 ties one every day, is it safe to mate them 4 times? should i take him up on his offer for a 4th mating or is 3 the most we should have? any advice is welcome. thanks scarlet

I think that you will get mixed replies.

Personally, knowing that you have said how succesful things have been, and how willing your girl was - I would go for it.  And be pleased that the stud dogs owners are so accommodating.

If she says no - fine.

I appreciate that someone is going to post about the dangers of mating, but I would say yes, just on information that you have given us.

Personally I can't see why on earth 4 matings would be necessary if this is an experienced stud and your girl was happy to stand.... but I suppose there is no harm in it.

Personally thinking, if you've had 3 successful ties and your bitch has been accomodating all 3 times then fingers crossed you will have your litter. I have the stud dog and owner come stay with me for a week and we've only ever done 2 ties when the dogs have indicated they are ready, never seen the need to do more and always been very successful, so there really isn't a need.

But saying that 4 will do no harm, if you are worried. :-) But if the eggs are there and the sperm is good then the deed is already done. :-)

thanks for your fast replies. i think i will say yes and see how my girl feels. (i would never force her) but if she is wiling then i will. the stud dog owner has been great. thanks again scarlet

If they don't mind you might as well try, but if you've had 3 successful ties you've a pretty good chance of a litter.

Well mating number 4 just over, another tie 15 mins this time. Both dogs where very calm again. My girl still seems very eager and was pestering the stud again straight after they broke apart lol. Had to crate her in the end, she was willing to make it 5 the little tart lol. Just have to wait and see now. Cant wait already lol thanks again for everyone's help your all great. love scarlet

The thing about mating for as long as a bitch is wiling to stand it means that the last mating will have been when the eggs were almost gone so ensures timing was good, in case the earlier ones were early.
