I have just made some liver cake & have got some liver left over, so wanted to know if anyone knew how to make the harder liver treats (I don't want to make any more cake as the smell was making me feel ill). Is it just a case of boiling the liver & then baking it?

Yes, that's what I do. Boil it, cut it and then pop it in the cooker.

Hi Freeway, if you have a microwave, cook the liver in there if you want it to last. If you cook it for too long, it takes on the appearance of Aero chocolate, but is very hard, like a dog biscuit. When its cooked like this is dosnt go off, and never gets slimey and horrible.

Or, if it is a hot day, boil it, wash it and then put it in the car to cook!

Here you go patbee :D :D

LIVER CAKE RECIPE.

Those of you who show dogs may well have used Liver cake to bait your dogs in the ring but for those of you who may not have heard of it below we have printed the recipe for this cake as it seems to have the effect of holding your dogs attention whilst in the ring and has the added advantage of not making one's hands sticky.

8ozs Liver [preferably Lambs]
4ozs S/R Flour
2 Eggs
2 Cloves Garlic/ or 2 tsps garlic puree.

Put all the ingredients into a blender until the mixture is smooth, pink and runny [not too rigid a requirement if you prefer to make it a bit chunky' Pour into greased swiss roll type baking tin and place in the oven [Gas Mark 4] for around 30-40 minutes.
Leave to cool and cut into bite size pieces.
It can be frozen into individual bags [enough for a show] and makes enough for 4/5 shows.

Be careful how hard it becomes, we bought some dried liver treats a few months ago and one of our Rotties had a blockage because of it, She kept being sick bringing up tiny amounts of the treat, it took three weeks to clear and I have never used them since

Thanks dessie. I don't go to shows with Meg just looking for treats that will get her attention. I will try it at the weekend.

I hope Meg enjoys them :)
