Topic Dog Boards / Health / Golden Retriever off his food
- By Goldenoldie Date 26.03.10 00:54 UTC
Hi all,

My 3 year old goldie has always had dried food (James Wellbeloved), which I add warm water to make a gravy.  I feed him once a day at the same time after he's been walked and I've eaten.  He has always eaten all of his dinner straight away.  However, over the last 3 days he has started to leave some food in his bowl.  Day 1 he left most of it and day 2 and 3 he's left some of it and has not gone back to finish it off.

He's drinking plenty of fluid,  has no problems going to the toilet and is as playful as ever.  However, he has been sleeping a little more than he usually does.  He's also up to date with all his worming, boosters and flea treatments.

Is he just having a few off days, is this normal or should I take him to the vets to get him checked out?  Any advice would be welcomed.

Thank you

He definately hasn't eaten something he shouldn't like a sock. I'm now paranoid about that after my two Flatties having to be opened up for doing that in that in the last year. If he is toileting OK though it probably isn't that.
If his exercise has been reduced he just may not be as hungry. Have you tried splitting his meal into two meals a day, morning and night, as it is kinder on their stomachs.
I would take him for a check up if you are at all unsure, after all no-one knows their dog better than their owners.

If you have a normally gutsy enthusiastic eater then a few 'off days' may well be something to worry about.  It would concern me with one of mine for instance.

If I notice a change in eating I check the following before deciding about vets:
Check his output - is he going to the toilet normally, no straining, no blood etc?
Check mouth, teeth and gums
See how much food has been eaten - I weigh mine so I know what is being left
Feel his ribs - does he seem to have lost weight
Has he been sick?

One of mine recently had an obstruction and was showing similar symptoms - if I hadn't got him to the vet we might have lost him.  Hope yours is ok
