Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Hip scoring for dalmations
- By goldie [gb] Date 20.03.10 20:31 UTC
When i was out walking my dogs this evening,i met one of our neighbours with his 1yr old dalmation bitch, in conversation he said he was going to let her have pups at some point.
I then asked him when would he be hip scoring her and he said he wont be as they dont need doing.
I was quite taken back by that, and thought he was just going to be a byb.
Is he correct with what he said about dalmations or is that just him not wanting to be bothered.
Just Curious.

Don't know much, can only go on KC ABS thingy- recommended test but not essential: Hips and BAER testing

Someone will know for definite though

its him not wanting to be bothered, I havent looked it up but im pretty sure all medium/large/giant breeds should be hipscored.

Not many dalmatians are hipscored, although in an ideal world they would be. The worst score recorded so far is 39, so it's true that it's not considered a major problem in the breed.

Of more importance is whether or not the bitch has been BAER scored and has bilateral hearing.

Thankyou for your replys,
They are not the type of people that would do any tests,in fact i was getting very angry when i talking to him....my hubby was trying to drag me away.
I could not argue about the hips as i didnt know if he was right.
I asked him why he wanted to breed and his answer was he liked doing it as a hobby, more like he thinks he about to make some money.

Then he turned to me and said why dont you ever breed your goldens...i snapped back at him and said for what purpose do i want to breed for,i leave that to the experts and he went quiet and we said goodbye.

It's possible that the bitch is already BAER tested, because reputable breeders do it before selling the pups.

Yes he said the mother was BAER tested.
So the bitches dont have to be Hip Scored to be registered with the KC to have litters...is that correct.
Does that apply to all breeds then as i thought they did.

The mother might be BAER tested, but his bitch should have been as well (they can be tested from 5 weeks of age, and it's a one-off test).

No dogs, of any breed, have to be hipscored for their offspring to be registered.

Thankyou i didnt realise that,i asummed they would have.
How does the kennel club know that the bitch is sound then,it could have terrible hips....and they still register the litter.

Without MRI full body scanning how could it be proved a bitch is sound?? not all breeds suffer witha high prevalence of HD, mine certanly dont. There of lots of things that could mean it would not be a good idea to breed from so without making full health checks mandatory and include hip/ elbow scoring, patella, eyes, hearing and every other ailment you can think of they will have to take registrations.

OK Thankyou, thats why i asked the question and you have now answered it.
