Topic Other Boards / Foo / Cat question - vaccinating old cats
- By MADDOG [gb] Date 17.03.10 09:57 UTC
Could an experienced cat person help me please?  I have two cats, 11 & 17 years old, healthy & happy.  I vaccinated them until they were about 8 & 14 years old, then lapsed with my boosters.  Should I either restart a course, do a booster or just leave it?

I wouldn't have thought you'd be able to do a booster. I expect you would be looking at a re-start to bring their immunity levels back up. Maybe it depends on what sort of lives your cats live. I know many cats that are not vaccinated and live their autumn years in front of a fire. If they (particularly) the younger one, gets out and about hunting and prowling maybe it would be safer getting it done. All my cats are vaccinated but they spend all day in the fields getting up to no good with the wildlife.

I stop vaccinating my cats when they get to 10 -but of course mine are indoors only, or go out into a safely enclosed run, so never meet other cats that don't belong to me. If I had outdoor cats I'd vaccinate every year to be safe, like I do with the dogs.

thanks for that.  One has started going back out again after not for years!  I think she actually only wanders to our only neighbour's kitchen!

I agree with marrianne I haven't vaccinated any of my old moggies In fact my vet at the time who has sadly moved to pastures new advised me not too she felt it was too much for an old immune system oh yes mine are outdoor cats well and indoor of course lol
