How many generations ahead do you look?

For example do you decide on a mating then wait to see what you have in a litter? Then breed the next generation to a dog who you like?
Or
Do you plan the mating with an eye on where you are going to go for the next two, three, four or five generations?

Do you choose a stud dog or allow your dog to mate a bitch based on whether the pedigrees match up or on a more long term basis, knowing the breeding plan these dogs are part of?

Obviously breeders choose to breed a dog because it has something to offer in breeding terms, health temperament etc... but I am wondering how you plan ahead if you do for the next generation or generations?

I do the latter, especially considering we have a small gene pool it is too easy to breed yourself not a corner with no where to go, but you are so reliant on what others are doing too.

Obviously when planning generations ahead the plans are subject to revision, but certainly you need to look ahead all the time and think where individuals from each litter you breed might fit into the bigger picture.

But as they say the best laid plans of mice and men ;)

I have just mated a bitch to a specific dog and will be mating another bitch hopefully next month to a stud of the same lines. Im planning ahead as if everything goes according to plan a pup from each litter should compliment each other....................but thats if things go according to plan!!!!!

I do think health is a major factor and would never breed from untested dogs.
