Hi all

went for scan with Lucy when she was at 40 days the scan came up as negative... so carried on with day to day things as normal....

any how.... Lucy looked as though her teets were getting bigger but not really putting much weight on.. she then over the past few days has been having a white stringy discharge... so yesterday i rang my vet he asked me to go back in....

He saw Lucy and said well she does look pregnant but i cant feel anything... so he suggested a re-scan, he said this would pick up if the womb was inflamed causing infection & if nothing showed he would treat as a phantom and give her some kind of injection to stop any milk been produced....

he put the scan machine on and there it was... a tiny spine & the little heart beat!!! he said the only thing i should be worried of is that there looks to be only 1 but she is carrying very high....

she is also due within 5 days eek:

i know that i was expecting this but after been told there was nothing there & lucy not to really change until just now i had nothing pre-pared .... so it was all systems go yesterday....
i went through a stage of feeling terrible yesterday cause i thought she'd not been pregnant therefore not been on puppy food etc.. but now i know ihave a few days to get organised!!

has anyone else been told this before??

I was told by my ex-vet..." what do you think?" and I said yes I thought she was pregnant, but I would like to know how many.

" Well shows how much you know...she's empty....try again next season" He gloated :-(

My bitch went on to have 6....yes SIX bitches !!

The skill of ultrasonography lies with the operator.

could there only be 1??

Just wait and see what she brings.

Vets are very often inaccurate, if there is one then there could be more, pups are great at hiding and vets notorious for not finding them.

Just get all your whelping preparations ready and see how things go, be prepared for anything which is what most of us who breed do anyway. :-) Nothing is ever set in stone, so keep a close eye on her after the first is born.

We shall see in approx 5 days what happens, keep us informed very interested to see how many pups there actually are.

Good luck and any probs or worries someone will always be here. :-)

Be vigilant as one puppy may not be enough to bring her labour on.

Hope everything goes well. xx

I was told no 3 years ago, then on the Friday before she should have been due to whelp on the following Monday, I felt puppy movement, took her for a scan, and there was 1 VERY LARGE puppy, we were told if labour hadn't started by Monday then she would need a c-section, which we booked there and then.

Monday no signs of labour, and one very healthy 1lb cocker pup born by c-section!

I think the trouble is if there is only 1 pup, they generally need to be born by C section because to get the Oxytocin going to push the puppies out naturally you need a few more pups in each uterine horn.

I'd keep a close eye on her, as you are but if she were my bitch and there is definately only 1 pup, I wouldn't hang around for too much longer than her due date.  Good luck.

I know it's a different species but one of my cats had a singleton kitten and had him without any problems.  Even the vets were surprised when I told them it was just one and she's delivered him without a hitch in the enclosed litter tray!   (Yes, I did take them both out of there, thankfully I'd just cleaned it!).

We had a GR who had a singleton with no problems, so it can happen naturally :-)

My Ridgeback bitch started labour with a single puppy but couldn't pass it, she was born by C-section.  Best of luck to you, it will be a very special puppy xx

Goodness... well... I have never bred dogs and never learned anything about scans til I came on here. I have a close friend who works for an out of hours vets and is a trainee vet tech. He had to get a dog scanned last week, said there was one puppy... so I just said Oh yeah? wait and see wink wink! Haven't had an update..... but the main issue is despite his training, he hadn't realised til I said this, that scans can be that inaccurate; it made him think a lot! CD is doing good, and educating by proxy. Go CD!
