I am a little confused on this matter.

I have been advised conflicting things by different people and would like the general masses input.

My last litter i was advised to worm 2 weeks before pups due, i did this with panacure (sp) powder and it was fine.

i am now being told that i shouldnt work her at all and that it should have been done before mating.

answers on the back of a post card to the normal address!

Thankies

It depends what product you use. Panacur powder is licenced to treat pregnant bitches daily from day 40 of pregnancy till 2 days post-whelping. Bitch and pups should then be wormed at 3 weeks, 5 weeks and 7 weeks.

Why does nobody recommend Drontal?

The info given on the literature says;

"Use During Pregnancy and Lactation

Consult a veterinary surgeon before treating pregnant animals for roundworms.

The product may be used during lactation.

Do not exceed recommended dose when treating pregnant bitches"

So does this mean it is safe to use?

I am reluctant to change to a different wormer just because she is pregnant

I have always used drontal no problem - I did double check with a vet that it was ok to use during pregnancy. I worm prior to mating, then 10 days before due date and 10 days after, and then when I worm the litter. I think it is on the vet-medic website that states to administer 10 days before and 10 days after, but it could be hyperdrug.

As I understand it only Panacur is licensed for use in Pregnancy.

Well, I did seek veterinary advice first as I said, and have used drontal in pregnancy without any problems whatsoever over 7 years of breeding - originally in large breed where litters averaged 11 pups and now in my toy breed.
