My friends mum has just got a lab puppy,7 weeks old,I think to young to leave mum yet, however her vet gave her dronatol worm tablets, she wormed the puppy on thursday and little one has been poorly and passing lots of worms when pooing, apparently stools are very loose,I spoke to the lady on the phone yesterday and told her my vet has always give me panacur for my pups,is dronatol to harsh on a pups tummy any advice please,as will pass on to the lady concerned.
Puppies are better off with Drontal Puppy suspension than tablets I feel -although it has to be said giving a tablet is less messy. I don't use Panacur myself as I've heard too many horror stories about it -but then those that use that have usually heard as many about Drontal. :) It sounds like this pup had a bad worm infestation which is probably the cause of it feeling unwell rather than the treatment -was the pup not wormed regularly by the breeder? I wouldn't expect to see any worms at that age. 7 weeks however is the normal age for pups to leave of this size dog.
I've always used Drontal (but puppy liquid form not tablets) for my pups it's fine to give until 12 weeks of age it has never caused any problems whatsoever, my vet has then however moved me onto panacur. The tablet form can be given from 2 weeks of age also, so don't worry the vet has still prescribed fine. It is just easier with pups to give the liquid. Sometimes pups and dogs can have a bad reaction to Drontal and Panacur and other wormers it is not something one can know until it happens.
The pup sounds as though it has not been wormed by the breeder, worms in themselves can cause the runs also. It is more important to get rid of the worms, just make sure that the pup has plenty of fluids if it has the runs. Sure the drontal will be fine. :-)
Popped off to answer the phone half way through my post, ditto Marianne :-)
Having just had a pup that was quite wormy the vet gave me drontal liquid to worm her. It did the trick and she is flying now. You might consider getting some lactol puppy milk if she is poorly, it will encourage her to drink and will has calories too for her. Help build the pup a little.
i always give drontal puppy suspension also, me too have heard horror stories about panacur, sounds like the puppy hasnt been wormed regularly, i start worming from 2 weeks old, and weigh each puppy to make sure the dose is correct, sont worry puppy will soon be worm free.
