Hi All not been on for ages, i ave a bitch of almost 8 yr's who is lossing weight, she has had tests at the vets with nothing showing up, all her liver and kidney functions are great, she dose not have diabetis or a bowel problem infact the Vet said everything was great for her age.
She was mated in Dec, but thankfully not in whelp(because of how she is now) she has been put on brown rice with either fish or chicken and live yougert. yesterday she ate 2 meals and her yougert also had treats today she won't eat anything.
She was sicking back every meal untill yesterday, now she has stopped that but not eaten a full meal today, just picked at what has been put infront of her.

I would be great full for any advice at all

how do you know she's definitely not in whelp?
- By Justine [gb] Date 07.02.10 17:51 UTC
I wouldn't be trying to feed her a full meal after a dodgy tummy like that. :(

Has your vet xrayed her to see if there is anything lodged in her stomach/bowel?  If not, I'd be getting that done asap.  Even if something is lodged, her bloods might be ok at the moment.

nothing lodged in her tummy on intestine, only feeding her very small meals 2/3 times a day

sometimes they dont see them?
- By suepei [gb] Date 09.02.10 10:35 UTC
at Five weeks i think u would see something, she is def not in whelp. i am going to ask about colities not sure on spelling, she has not been sick for 5 days now but was loose on sat evening.
she has refused anything to eat so far today, even her yougert, she has had a couple of biscrok, its worrying me to death.
she has always been a good eater, never fat and always in nice condition, she looks thin and ribby now.
a friend asked if she had lost any head which she has not, she was thinking cancer which is bad in our breed.this is the 1st time she has ever been ill or out of sorts, she is still playing and wanting to go out, Just the eating thing.

Any advise on what to do next I would be greatful.

is she drinking as normal. does she seem in pain when you touch her tummy? could be collitis, pancreatitis, i think its too long for gastroenteritis, she would have gone down a lot faster. maybe ask vet for a full blood count

Have they done the test for Addisons?

Bitches, with weight loss, lethargy and vomiting (and shivering?) should have this ruled out.

Well my neighbours german shepherd cross at 8 years old developed an inability to digest certain nutrients from her food. She got very bad diorrahea and vomiting and lost an awful amount of weight. No appetite and her coat became dull and even though she liked walking with us and the other dogs, she was fading before our eyes. Initially she was treated with antibiotics for colitis. No success. An xray showed lots of bowel gas and bloods pointed to a pancreas issue. She has tablets now to help her digest food and steroids. She did improve but she is ten now and starting to slip again. Its very sad but she has a good quality of life and when that changes, I'm sure the tough decision to let her go will be made. I'm not sure if this pancreas test is part of routine bloods or not so maybe ask your vet. Lady liked mince cooked and salmon. Dont know if that helps or not

Just another thought as I'm going through the same with my nearly 12 year old boy.  Are you sure that your dog has been having it's worming tablets?  Lastar has always been a pain with tablets but I was certain that they'd been going down, now I'm not so sure.

I'd taken him for different tests etc. at the vets and all were coming back absolutely fine.  He had blood in his poo last week and then the other day had worms.  I'm now wondering whether he actually somehow hadn't been digested his tablets, so now he's being re-wormed and I'm hoping that it will be the solution!

Hi suepei, I am really sorry to hear about your girl. It's so worrying when our furbabies are not well. Could I ask please, when she had tests at the vets, was her white blood count up at all? x
- By suepei [gb] Date 13.02.10 15:16 UTC
Thanks Every one for your imput,
she started to eat again up to yesterday, she has had yogurtthis morning but turned her nose up at anything else, her white blood count was normal as was everything else, my vet is stummped.

She is going back in a week for more test but i don't know what to think about it all, my friend has said something about her not getting the signals from her brain to eat, she looks so poor, she is still intrested in life, not been sick for over a week and the soft stools have stopped, she is not drinking any more than usual and still wants her teats with the others, in fact is 1 of the 1st in line for them on a morning and evening.

she looks to have put a bit of weight back on as her ribs now look more covered, can still see her back bone, its so upsetting.

If it is actually pancreatitis, it is sometimes amazing at how well they react to pancreatic enzymes.

I lost a 17 year old last year.  She had been on pancreatic enzymes for 5 years.  She was only poorly for the last 2 days of her life.

going to see vet again today, kodie still only picking at her food, eating just what she wants, and letting her.
I am hoping its nothing nasty will ask him to redo teats.

and look for at maybe it being pancreatitis.
at a loss at what elase to do.

Don't forget to let us all know how things go.  Good Luck.  Jean

As asked previously has she been scanned?  I'd be worried that something, especially with her being mated could have gone wrong.
- By suepei [gb] Date 21.02.10 16:40 UTC
She is going back to the vets tomorrow, but i am not holding out much hope, she has gone down hill over the weekend.
she has not eaten over the weekend, still don't know whats wrong, lost all faith in the vets now.
- By suepei [gb] Date 23.02.10 08:34 UTC
thank you all for your imput, i have to tell you that we and the vet thought it would be kinder to let Kodie go over the bridge yesterday.
Still no the wiser to what it was, all tests again came back clear, the vet said looking at her something should have been shouting out at them.
After being up there on friday it was like she just gave up.
I feel cheated and angry, that they could not do anything, but then i thik if they could not find anything how could they My mind is numb at the moment, maybe i will feel something when i get her back.
thank you again for being there.
