Hi all.  Am I right in presuming that both dog and bitch can pass infections to each other during mating?  Obviously a bitch can be swabbed prior to mating, what tests can be done on the dog?

Anyone?

The males can be swab tested the same as bitches Zajak.

Thanks for your reply Justine.  Just what I was hoping you would say, I have a breeder asking for my bitch to be swabbed (which I am more than happy to do).  However, I felt that perhaps they should both have tests if we are to be ultra careful!  Almost sounds like a tv ad!

You can have all sorts done swabs for one, jab for canine herpes, ovulation tests for the bitch to see when best time to mate and sperm count test done on the male to see how fertile he is.

The owner of the stud we want to use said we might have to have blood test done, there are all sorts. I would have thought that the stud owner would also do the test as I presume the stud has been used before on another bitch.

Personally I would think it more likely for a dog to have something they have picked up than a bitch as dogs usually have more matings than bitches.  A bitch may be mated only a couple of times in her life where a male may have been used on another bitch last week last month etc.

If a stud dog owner expected me to get the bitch swabbed then I woudl want to know their dog was clear of anything.
