hi out of curiosity what is the percentage of bitches that get pregnant after a tie? my oh said about 60% i would have said about 75% many thanks

thats a hard 1! ive been very luckly none of mine have ever missed.

it seems to be that in accidental matings 100% get pregnant.

in well planned, well researched matings probably only about 50% lol

on a serious note, i would think about 90% if they are timed correctly and mating is seen as successful,ie a tie or a dog held in after climbing the ladder. timing is normally the key

yes timing is everything and im lucky i have a boy that lets me know when the times right :)

it also depends on the breed... Some seem to miss more than others.
I know in my breed last year in the union meeting (where clubs around the world get together) they have raised a concerns as up to 50% of females do come pregnant after mating!
They are now planning a survey across member clubs to investigate it further...

Perhaps I'm just plain lucky.  I have only ever had one girl miss, and we didn't get a tie.  She took next season just fine.  I think the timing was out first time around.  All my other girls have tied, and never missed.

I've had 2 bitches miss. First after a caesar, the vet reckons it was the scarring that prevented further pregnancy. The second because I used an infertile dog :-( She is now pregnant to a different dog :-p . So I think that you would need to know the reasons for a miss, not just did the bitch miss.

Well I have had a number miss.  In three (4 misses) cases it looks like the males were sub fertile or unfertile as both only produced a couple of pups/litters and missed to other bitches, two were getting older and not been used regularly, and another had low thyroid it was later discovered.

So altogether I have had 5 misses and twice failed to get Jozi mated on two occasions (first and third attempts ;) ), but have had 15 succesful litters.

There are statistics here http://www.vetmed.lsu.edu/eiltslotus/Theriogenology-5361/k9_breeding_management.htm that show with correct timing (the main reason for failed conception is incorect timng) that canine fertility is over 90%.

I'm going to lower the stats - my bitch has been mated on 3 seasons and only had puppies once!

We have only had 1 miss, this time our female has had puppies, our stud dog has missed to just 2 females in over 20 studs, 1 came on the wrong day (the woman adamant she was correct with her timing) only managed a slip mating which is not usual for our dog, and second the female was a fiesty 1, she was spot on with the days as the dog will only mate if they are correct, she was steep inside.

We have a lovely bitch who I mated and the first time it didn't work even though we got two really good ties we mated her again on the next season again two good matings and we got one puppy who is absolutely everything we could ask for all the good bits went to one puppy and she is stunning and just wants to work.  We mated her good mating scanned in whelp at 5 weeks and we saw at least 2 came to day of whelping nothing got her scanned and there was nothing.  So how much is down to the dog and how much is down to the bitch, is it hereditry?  I did the blood tests this time to make sure.  If we manage to get a litter next time we get her mated then we are on the 50% success rate.  When we were unlucky the first time I just thought it was us but now a few years down the line we have realised we are not alone it is life and I guess it happens for a reason but if anyone has any tips for when we mate her the next time please let us know.

Interesting!  I wonder if some bitches reabsorb more than they should?  And do their daughters have the same problem?  Never researched this, just a thought triggered by your comment.

Although, with only one pup - who actually got all the good bits!!  YAY!

Maybe try the CHV vaccine next time round. Won't hurt her so its worth a shot.

Interesting you mention CHV, the vet I saw last week mentioned it as well and having had a chat with a friend she did wonder whether mother may have it and passed it on to daughter. 

Theres a blood test you can do for CHV but they have to be shedding the virus at the time to get a positive result. If its lying dormant you can get a false negative which won't help at all. I wouldn't give it as a matter of course but if a bitch won't take repeatedly, suffers from early embryonic loss or has more stillborns than you would expect, its certainly worth getting it done, just to rule it out.

We still haven't got a 50% success rate, we were up to 10 attempts and 7 misses between 2 girls but our last 2 attempts were both successful.

We have been really lucky 1 miss each with 2 different females, we give antibiotics, canine herpes jab and blood test from day 8ish,
