Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / type of food recommended for a german shepard

Hello, i am looking into getting our first German Shepard Puppy. Would anyone be able to suggest the best food product to feed them on as i don't want to put them on anything really cheap as it is not good for their health. I look forward to hearing from somebody shortly.
Many thanks sam

The best food at first would be what the breeder has weaned the puppy onto - feed that for the first two weeks of getting a puppy to avoid stomach upsets, even if you change foods later.

I see that you are also looking for recommendations to find a breeder.  It's a different breed to yours but I found that my youngest dogs breeder was a mine of useful information; from food to medical advice.  If you take the time to find the sort of breeder that produces the type of dog you like, but also one that you feel comfortable with you'll find their knowledge invaluable.  Mine was able to explain what she feeds her dogs and why.  She had experience of other foods and was able to give examples of why one type suited better than another.  When our chosen brand became difficult to source she was still there to advise all her puppy owners of the most suitable alternatives.  3 years later she's still my first port of call for all things dog!

Incidentally I first met my chosen breeder at Crufts.  If you get a chance to visit the Discover Dogs section you'll be able to get some useful advice about the types you're looking for.  Also grab a catalogue and have a look at what is in the ring.  You will get a chance to see not only the breed lines you like, but those that you don't.  Very useful :)

As an aside - I feed mostly raw now but like Arden Grange as my support food.  Good food and excellent customer service I've found.

I agree with everything dogs a babe has said. Defo go with what the breeeder feeds at the beginning then you may decide to change later. I feed raw and use arden grange as my back up should I need it for both my dogs (GSD and POM x.) My gsd's sister is still on royal canin which is what the breeder used and is very popular. There are lots of others part it does also depend on what suits your dog and your pocket. I would firstly concentrate on finding a good breeder that has the type of pup your like. For example do you wabnt long or shorthair I knew I wanted longhair so concentrated on those breeders. Discover dogs in November is an excellent source of information, otherwise have allok on here and talk to the breeders or through the kennel club.
Sorry if I am teaching you to suck eggs I for some reason assumed this was your first dog and maybe it isn't
