Wondering if anyone has any suggestions really.  Our 6 year old Vizsla has started to wee in the middle of the night and we think she has now developed into a habit.  She sleeps upstairs (not in our room) and seemingly she gets up in the night and either wees on the bathroom floor (tiled) or on the carpet outside the bathroom.  she used to bark in the night if she ever needed a wee, but has now stopped.  she probably does this 2-3 times a week.  we have increased the number of wees that she has on an evening by letting her out more and giving her treats for weeing outside and also go to bed later and get up earlier, but this doesnt appear to help. (her last wee is at 10:30 and we get up at 6:30am) if she wees on the carpet I clean it with lots of water and biological washing liquid and then leave bicarb on top of it to try and remove the smell.  I dont know if we have over done it on the good treats as we think she might now have smaller wees just to get the treats...but not sure if she could be this calculating! ;-0 any thoughts or suggestiosn would be ace.  I dont think it is cystitis or anything as they are BIG wees rather than little ones, and she is fine if she sleeps in our room! Thanks

First thing you need to do is to have her checked out for infection. Once given the all clear (hopefully ;-) ) you will need to try to find out a way to stop her. Easier said than done. I stopped it by allowing the dogs to sleep in my bedroom with the door closed. That way I can hear any dog that moves. Otherwise I would still get the occasional wee. Others have done it by caging overnight, or only allowing access to one room. Or you could set your alarm and get up in the middle of the night and let her out. But get her checked out first.

i would be tempted to put a stair gate on the bathroom door and keep her with her bed in that space all night, then she can only wee on tiles and not your carpet. if you use a stair gate then she want feel trapped in like she would if you shut her in one room.
As the other post said i would still get her checked at the vet just incase of infection. if nothing else it rules out one reason for her doing this.
Also has anything changed at home or with her routine that may of upset her, little things can have funny affects on dogs and they can show stress by wetting or pooing in the house.
Is she dry in the day? even if she doesn't go out for a few hours, i'm just wondering if she shows signs of not being able to hold her wee in the day as well.
If an infection is ruled out then i would continue with going back to basics and treating her when she wees in the garden and maybe set your alarm once in the night to take her out so she breaks the habbit. may also be worth taking her for a walk before bed so she's really tired and hopefully sleeps most the night.

Once infection is ruled out.... I know you said you encourage more wee's, but what about possibly taking her out for a late night walk, empty her system out and tire her out making it less likely that she will wake up in the night to wee??
Hope your girl is ok :)

My 13 year old dog also needs to wee during the night. He sleeps in the bedroom so I'm aware of when he needs to go out but it can be so exhausting getting out of bed 2 or 3 times every night - sometimes I think it would be easier just to clean up after him in the morning......

Hi

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions, I think we are going to put a babygate on the room where she sleeps and go from there.  We have been taking her for a night time walk round to try and tire her out and also empty the system, but it hasnt worked! I do kinda think that she has the idea that even if she has a tiny wee she gets a treat - so isnt emptying herself completely in the hope more treats will come along!  she has been known to do a fake wee (if we ask her to wee on command!) just to get a treat!  Vizslas are too clever!
Has anyone any recommendations on solutions that I can clean the tiles with - just to completely get rid of the smell of wee to her?  we tend to wash down with bio washing powder/liquid at the mo, but just wanted to remove any smell that there could be lingering so we have a clean slate so to speak.

Thanks again
x

washing power is really good but i sometimes have used water with a drop of bleach in first and then wash again with the washing powder, so there's no bleach left on the floor.
try only giving her treats every other times she wees on her walk but just praise her the rest of the time, hopefully then she want know if the treat is coming or not and will try and go again just incase she gets the treat next time.
