Hi. If you look in this months issue, I can't remember which section I saw it, but it was a 'problem' question and answer page (not Katie!)you will see the full thing. I couldn't beieive it!

Hi tripsox

I had a quick look at the mag and managed to find the page about the Weim. The vet was only saying to tie the dog up or put in its crate for a short amount of time and not for the day...if he had said for the day I would be writing to them!! As of course that's far too long and Not Nice!!

Best wishes

What does a short lenght of time mean? 1 Hour, 3 hours? Just popping to the shop, tie dog up, go to shop, meet friend, chat, oh, just pop in to see friend, OK have a quick coffee....... Tie ANY big breed up, especially a dog such as a Weimaraner, and it will not like it one bit, so instead of solving the proble you are adding to it.......Why not tie it up to an outdoor kennel?
Sorry, I just can't accept this as a course of action. And they have left this problem until the dog is 9 mths to tackle? At this age they are rather large to be comfortably confined to a crate, especially if not used to it. It would have to be one heck of a big one for the dog to be able to stand without hitting its head!
It still infuriates me, and I am awaiting their reply.

A local Weim killed himself last October when his idiot owners went away for the weekend, leaving the dog tied up with access to their shed for shelter and instructions to their neighbours to pop round and feed him! Well it was that weekend when we had all of those terrrible storms (and people using fireworks too), the dog must have been scared witless and tried to escape but his collar got caught up on the gate-post and hung him, so very sad, and something that should never have happend.

What a tragedy for the poor dog! I can't imagine anyone being so cruel as to do that, but it does happen. I had thought the old days of tethering dogs, inside or out, had long gone. It only takes a very few minutes for a dog to strangle. This is why I couldn't understand an 'expert' advising anyone to leave a dog tethered.

Hi Tripsox

I see what you mean now, it took a while for the old brain cells to muster!!!

I think you have a valid point, it could indeed be dangerous to tie a dog up and leave it. Especially if that dog is not used to it.

My friend mary had a collie she tied on a swivel stake to the lawn, this was accepted practice where she lived at the time (and years ago when such thing swere more commonplace) and tragically the dog tried to jump down from the grass area to the paved area, the line was not long enough and he choked himself to death. Horrible horrible, horrible.

I have also heard of many tethered ponies who have got themselves in to serious life threatening situations when thethered, I will never forget one photo of a piebald strangled as he walked round and round a tree and ended up choked, I have no words fo rthat then and I still don't now.

Best wishes

Yeah, and try to advise them that they've put an error regarding a breed and it could take up to a year for them to finally change it.
