I feel the need to learn more and have been nosing about on Amazon and have across many different books on Canines and none are really that cheap, so don't want to waste money on a book which i'm not going to get much out of.

Can anyone recommend some good books in which i'm going to learn.
Genetics,first aid, behaviour etc..
I was wondering if any of the books leaning towards vets were worth reading at all?

Once you'e got some recommendations do try your local library too.  You can usually view stock from every library in your county and they will get it in for you.  If you write to them with a list of titles you would be interested in, you may find they are willing to buy some books upon request.

Whilst some books will prove to be 'keepers' others may be worth a read but you don't really want to buy!!

One of the best books I ever bought is this: http://www.amazon.com/Dog-Language-Encyclopedia-Canine-Behavior/dp/0966048407/ref=pd_sim_b_3

i got a couple of canine medicine and relatively common diseases books from my vets practise, when they brought new editions. worth asking about at your vets, i paid a fiver for them and original mark up was about 50 quid or summat like that. they said they sent the money off to dogs trust or some sort of rescue. but i doubt it. didnt bother me tho, some of the money i saved buyin the books i spent on dog and cat food for our local centre. will have a root out and see if i can find them. from what i remember they were good books, knowing what i do now, i would probably spend the full price on them

Wow you guys, thanks..

Any books on genetics at all? Think we've covered a lot on training and behaviour..

I have in the past gone to my library and they've searched for books i've wanted to read. Only found a few so i ordered them, paid a small fee and they never got them for me.. So have little faith in our library system.

Born To Win by US Norwegian Elkhound breeder/judge Patricia Craige Trotter
- By Tanya1989 [ir] Date 23.01.10 18:29 UTC
is it a general breed book B?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 23.01.10 19:24 UTC Edited 23.01.10 19:37 UTC
Yes, obviously she uses her own experiences in her breed to illustrate her points, but other breeds and successful breeders too.

I bought and read it a few years ago now, thinking it would be interesting as she has my breed, but ti was far more of general interest than I assumed it might be.

Obviously it is a bit American.

She is judging our breed club championship show in April

MMM wonder if she would sign my copy of her book???
- By Tanya1989 [ir] Date 23.01.10 19:31 UTC

Right had better go through this long long list now..

Will it keep on growing??
- By LouiseDDB [gb] Date 24.01.10 00:13 UTC
I have a Reading list from a course I was going to do. It's ina drawer in the other room so I'll get it in the morning. On the iPhone now. Hopefully I can lengthen the list with a few that haven't been mentioned. One that I have read was basically the word version of the programme that was on the other week horizon? List includes prices too
