can anyone recommend a good dog genetics book have seen a couple
Genetics for Dog Breeders- Roy Robinson       the updated version is too expensive for me just yet, have to save up if its any good

does anyone have the older one (1982) can you say how up to date it is, how much of canine genetics has been discovered since 1982?

Quite a bit new since developing DNA tests and mapping the canine genome.
As an example, I don;t know if Robinson's book would include the K gene which was found by DNA research.

thats what i was worried about.... cant see the point in spending 20 quid on a book about genetics from 1982 which in all fairness is bound to be out of date

or £60 on a book from 1990- its still 20 years old.... there is plenty of books on genetic diseases, but was looking for one on general genetics

Try searching for books on Blackwells
They have branches in most university towns/cities

Sorry if that link is not allowed, I'm relatively new here :)

i bought the roy robinson book before my first litter as i wanted to know about colour inheritance and also the risk of inheritance of a fault that crops up in my bitches breed.the book itself is good regarding different types of mating and colour breeding/inheritance, but really, once youve read it a few times i found the book then becomes pretty redundant.i found a more informative book on breeding/mating is the pat craige book born to win, breed to succeed, which although she has elkhounds has far more info on mating/line breeding etc.hope this helps, roy.

Depending on how in-depth you want to get, you could try
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed
Just use it as a search engine, and it will bring up all relevant research articles.  So you could search for 'dog coat genetics' or whatever you fancied.  After you've searched, you can filter it on the right by clicking 'review' which will give you articles which summarize other people's work (very useful!), or 'free full text' which will show you all open access articles.  If there are any you're desperate for, but can't access, PM me and I may be able to help :-D
