Topic Dog Boards / General / Dog grooming course
- By Kyte [gb] Date 15.01.10 13:38 UTC
Hello,

I have always wanted to become a Dog groomer and think that I have reached a point in my life where I feel I'm ready. I have tried scouting around the internet for some Dog grooming schools but can't really find any within hours of here. I think City and Guilds courses would be a great start but there website show me some schools that do it, after contacting them, They don't!

I would like to eventually open my own shop and employ a few staff I could teach, as I know how hard it if to find places myself :)

I live in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Any Ideas, suggestions, anything, all really welcome!!

Thank you so much,

Richy~

Hello Richy, I know this is out of your area but you could contact Joanne at http://www.looknorth.net/

She and her colleague Zoe Duffy are part of the UK Groom Team and I booked a single day to take my dog along so they could teach me how to groom him. They were absolutely fantastic and I would recommend them without hesitation. They may be aware of something more in your area.

How much does it cost?

Tricolours, not sure if you are asking about the Looknorth day, but it was I think £75 when I went last year, well worth every penny

Thanks JAY15, but i was thinking more of a course to learn how to groom and trim most breeds

The Pet Care Trust have a list of their approved training centres if that's any help to you.

One that I had recommended to me was Lesley Garrett at Canine Design in Shepton Mallett, but I decided against using that particular training centre only because of the distance from where I lived at that time, so I cannot give an opinion on the actual training.

Course prices generally seem to be between £1500 and £2000 for a 20 day course.

I worked at a training school in Oxfordshire almost 30 years ago and it still has a good reputation today and worth investing the time and financial committment to learn a good foundation for your new career. :)

I suggested that someone who had done 12 months C&G training at her local college went for their taster day and she said that she'd learned more in that one day than she'd learned in the previous year!
The most important thing is to learn to trim to the breed standards and be different rather than clip everything off, which is what most other groomers do. :(

I trained at Look North with Joanne and Zoe and they were brill!! I did a 4 week course and learned to clip, trim and handstrip most breeds. They have a lot of dogs coming to their salon and so you are never spoilt for choice. I have groomed now for 5 years.

I also started doing C&G training at a local college and learnt nothing!! Thats why I went to Look North.

Good Luck

Hi Tricolours, Looknorth train people to groom all breeds, it was just that I only wanted to learn how to do my own. I did talk to the 'proper' students while I was in and saw how they handled the dogs and I thought they were fantastic. The website mentions residential facilities available if needed for students coming from futher away abd their costs seem very reasonable.
