Does anyone know if you have to book in advance for the eye testing at Manchester or whether you just turn up with your documents.  There is a phone number in the paper but I got an answerphone so thought I would ask on here before trying again.

I think there is something in the schedule if you look at it on higham.

edit to add:EYE TESTING
Mr J V Goodyear BVMS CertVOphthal MRCVS will be holding eye testing sessions under the
BVA/KC/ ISDS scheme from 10.00am - 4.00pm each day. No appointment necessary. Please
remember to bring along the dog's KC registration form. NB. As these sessions are held
within the precincts of the show only dogs entered at the show (including Not For Competition)
may be tested. Gonioscopy is not available. Cost of Test: £28.

Do remember that all dogs must be either chipped or tattooed as of 1st Jan 2010.

Thank you, I didnt think to look in the schedule !!   is £28 expensive ? im sure last time I only paid £15, although that was at a club show.

He is chipped and tatooed so no problems there :)

£15? Yes please!!

I wouldn't say so...I paid £25 in November and I think prices went up at the beginning of the year.

Edit: Just checked the BVA website, it's £27 including VAT so unless it's subsidised you won't find cheaper than that :) Price list here

I've just got in a schedule for SKC in May and eye testing there is £30.

We are hoping to get away with £25 per dog.

Just wondered though, with new proposals being announced tomorrow, do you think the BVA and KC should get behind the breeders and lower charges not raise them? After all if you have 10 dogs at £27 a go thats a lot of dosh, I wonder how many will not be tested unless being bred from?

I will hold my hands up to that Polly, Im getting Alf tested this year because there are a couple of people interested in using him.  I had him booked in to be eye tested last year but didnt make it to the show, didnt worry too much because he wasnt being used.  He has been tested every other year.

I'm looking to get dog's eyes tested at SKC and have no intentions of breeding although I will never say never. He also had his hips x rayed for scoring at the end of last month.

I think that is generally the case.  I have never managed to persuade a purely pet owner to spend £200 plus on having their dog hip scored and eye tested ;)  Add to this DNA testing if not hereditary clear,a nd checking Kidney function that would mean £500 in health testing, nearly as much as the cost of the puppy.

With ours being a numerically small breed just the breeding stock being tested gives and accurate picture of the state of the breed as about 20% of all KC registered are hip scored and eye tested.  This cannot possible be the case say in Labradors, whrre the percentage of dogs scored compared to those bred is smaller.
