Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / How do I stop my dog barking ?
- By furriefriends Date 04.01.10 10:41 UTC
I know we have been here before but has anyone any more ideas to help. My pom/chi has turned into a little yapper ! I think I said before she has supersonic hearing and will bark at things that arn't ther however in the last few weeks it seems to have got worse. atm I am at home full time so she has human company and the run of the house most times but the barking particulaly at the windows she can see out of (full length ) is continual unless I interven and now we have a problem wuth mygsd who normally is not bothered by passers by unless they have a dog now he has started reacting to anyone or anything going past.
Obviously I distract her/them and titbits when not barking would be good but she is rather" well built" and I am cutting back on her food to stop her becoming over weight ( she wont eat raw veg)
If I shut her in the kitchen she is most settled and fortunately its a big kitchen but I would rather find a way to cure her.
Any more ideas would be gratefully received. Have just about sorted her housetraining at last (18months) but only if I go outside with her (brrrr) she wont go if anyone else takes her out (or so they say) !!! little monkey

Thats one of my thoughts too Pam I would like another dog in the future (or 2 !)  dont want a family of barkers

I found the only way was training and removal from where they can see out.

In other words if you bark at the windows you get called away (if they do not respond to reacall then a houselien on them to enforce yoru comand), if that doesn't stop them, they get sent out of the area.

You have to be absolutely consistent.

I can now have my Lexi sat comfortably in a chair watching the passersby quietly, but while she was visiting with a  friend she got into barking at the collie that my friends bitch hates, and back to teaching quiet or your out.

As Brainless has said 100% consistent ssh or out.

I have a barker and he always gets worse during holidays.  We have more people walking past, there are more distractions for me so that I don't get to him fast enough, and then visitors leave doors open!

I don't think mine will ever stop barking completely (and neither should he) but I work on the principle that I'm happy for him to tell me someone is approaching or walking past BUT I don't want to be told 10 times.  He can bark once or twice then I thank him and call him away to do something else - on your bed, sit, come with me - anything will do just to move him away from the window.

If I know we have a major hazard approaching (foxhounds, cows, postman) I'll either keep him with me or put him in back where he has no windows.  It's a nuisance, but manageable, and all part of living with him - a dog almost perfect in every other way :)

BTW - yes it does have an effect on your non barker.  My gundog joins in too but as it's less instinctive with him and he's just copying, he is less likely to do it when on his own and will ssh very quickly once he's told me there are weirdos (cows) walking by!!

atm I am at home full time so she has human company and the run of the house most times but the barking particulaly at the windows she can see out of (full length ) is continual unless I interven and now we have a problem wuth mygsd who normally is not bothered by passers by unless they have a dog now he has started reacting to anyone or anything going past.

I would spend time building up a good association with the passers by, even if it means using her entire dinner ration, sit with her at the window and when you see someone approaching feed her one bit at a time till they have passed and then stop, if you keep this up you should be able to get to the point where she ses someone and looks to you for goodies.

It's important while not working on it (as in when your not around) that she doesn't have access to the windows that she can see people passing as that will undo the work you are doing.

I use privacy screen for my full length window at the back of my house which I got to stop my friends dog who stayed from barking at the birdies and it was very effective, I think cost me about £6.99 from B&Q basically just a frosted film that you can place over the door.

Thanks  guys I like the idea of feeding her when things are happening will give that ago. When I am out she is in the kitchen which is where she was with her crate from the first day we had her so is more settled there.
Think of me feeding 75g of raw food to her by hand !  I can stop her looking out of the windows by remembering to keep various doors shut as long as everyone else does to but really need to solve it. We now also have a set of foxes nearby who are making a right din which sets her off so I guess I will be using the same stratergies for those too.

Hi furriefriends
have you tried a complete change to his routine? teddy got much better after i walked him for longer in a different place at a different time.  it sounds mad but it's almost like he forgot that he used to bark all the time.  may also be that i walked him for longer and used one of those ball thrower things so he was more tired.  just an idea.

Thanks teddyboy I will give that a try to. As it happens her excercise regime has reduced lately as I am at home off sick but not going out atm and I have noticed her barking more (yes I know that sounds obvious being at home! ) Will see what I can do with that in mind. She was very good this morning out in the garden the terrier at the back started really barking she looked the looked at me I said "NO" and we both came in with no noice and a tidbit
