I'm trying to find out more about male incontinence in older dogs.  Our 8.5 year old male GSD (castrated at 18 months) has recently started to 'leak' for lack of a better word!  He is cleaning himself more and more often now when he is laying down and we are starting to notice the occasionally little mark when he gets up which he and the other dogs are very interested in.  There's no smell and it look clear.
I'd like to hold off taking him down the vets as he gets very distressed very quickly and wondered if anyone had experienced this with their dog, or if anyone knew of any natural remedies we could try?

My male neutered Cavalier has been incontinent for years -unfortunately the vet said there is nothing you can do for male dogs, Propalin only works for bitches apparently although it may be worth a try. Of course, the first thing you need to do is get a urine sample to check there is no infection -maybe it's as simple as tat -fingers crossed.

I had an elderly, castrated Toy Poodle years ago.  Once he got old, he would leak while he was asleep.  Before the days of vetbed, and I used to buy tumble twist cotton bath mats for his bed, and just keep throwing them in the washer.

Unfortunately for your boy, I would take him to the vet for a check up. As another poster said, you need to rule out infection or possible prostate problems.

I had a male dog with incontinence following a prostate infection. Propalin can be used "off-license" in male dogs and has a 50% chance of controlling sphincter mediated incontinence. It certainly worked with my boy :) I was so thankful as he was so distressed over his "leaking".

CSJ also do a herbal remedy for incontinence. Worth dropping them an email as to whether this is successful in males

xx
