Hi my pups R nearly 4weeks but I think thry have kennel cough! Mum hasn't been near other dogs showing signs but I know how contagious it is. A family member Stupidly brung round some rescue kittens when my bitch was 8 weeks pregnant that later were discovered may have been recovering from cat flu. Last few days pups have sneezed about once a day thought nothing of it but tonight I have heard them slighlty cough- not coughing fit but a cough every hour or so - only 3 of them though! I'm now just really worried about them getting an infection. What can I do?! Is it likely to be kennel cough?! I know that in adult dogs kennel cough is mainly just an irritate to the dog and rarely cause long term damage but what about pups as young as this?! I have done some reseach and I'm worrying more then ever now! So many people have said that the pups have died or needed putting to sleep! None of them seem I'll as they are playing, barking biting and suckling perfectly fine. Not crying excessivly but i just feel like crying right now :(
First things first, calm down and don't get yourself upset. Have you rang your vets?
Lois

if you are concerned best see a vet you cant be to careful with such young puppies.
It could be a number of things are they in a draft as they could catch a chill, is the room temp too hot making them dry , are they getting enough fluids. How is mum , are they chesty you could put a karvol dropped onto a cloth in the whelp box but away from the puppies if they are snuffly.
But to be honest if you are concerned I would get them checked out as they may need antibiotics .

They are suckling extremly well and playing with eachother. There isn't a draft and don't think it's too hot they have a covered dog crate with heat mat nxt to heater as my heating has broken down ATM. I will take them to vets tomorrow if coughing becomes more frequent or they have coughing fits. Mum seems perfectly fine only very early coughing is very active eating and drinking lots

best to check with the vet to put your mind at rest ..difficult to comment

From what my vet said cat to dog transmision of illness is not very likely, I would take a chill keep a close eye and aslong as feeding and lively try not to worry.
My pups last year got Kennel cough at about 4 days old , they didnt sound like your little ones, their whole body was shaking when they coughed, just like the adults as if something was stuck in their throats. They had Antibiotics for a week they all survived. I would check with your vet but it doesnt sound like it to me

Sounds reassuring. They aren't coughing excessivly about once an hour max and only one or two coughs not a fit if them that my dog had when he had it last year. Mum is coughing ever so slightly only few number of times a day and again not a bout of it just one or two - she is slighlg sneezy as are the pups. I will get them checked before Xmas so I'm not worrying about them during the holiday period and can start treatment asap if needed
Coughing 'can' be an indication of worms..one of the symptoms.
Pups and mum may need worming again, depending on which wormer you are using.
Best to get the vet check over thou just incase it's something else.

O I didn't know that. They are due for another worm tomorrow. I'm using a syrup that says I need to give 3ml to each if them. I'm just wondeing weather to change to the paste as 3ml by syringe is difficult due to worry of them choking. Obviously doing it ver slowly and little at a time.

Is the wormer a veterinary one like Panacur or Drontal, if not and it is one of the over the counter ones at Pet shops (they aren't a lot of good) then I would get drontal or Panacur.

Ye vet gave me syrup but u would prefer paste. I don't think it's kc as they haven't coughed for hours and it only seems to be at night? I will be taking them to vets for a general check up and will mention the sneezing/coughing. Hoping if it is a "symptom" of worms it will disappear after I have wormed them tomorrow

it could be the type of heating you are using making them dry by the time it gets to evening.

Oh ok ye the heating should be back on by tomrrow- do u think they will still need heat pad?! They have an enclosed crate as bedding area but play pen area obviously uncovered. They seems to have slught sneezes- could this be caused by the tempory heating!? What've time for the heating to go near Christmas in a little cottage and young pups!

dont know just a thought really but the temperature should be around 70ish for very young pups not so hot when they are moving about and on solids but you still need to keep it on day and night , just with you saying you have a heater rather than central heating if the puppies are in a small room then that would be fine although CH can make the air very dry to . I use a electric heater in my whelp room which is small but never had a litter during very cold weather.
do you have a room thermometer?
I would normally have removed the heat pad once they are on thier feet but this time of year its very cold, are they using it ?

Ye the do seem to use it, not all the time though it is very cold here with lots of snow and no heating it's a nightmare - I can deal with it using lots of clothes lol but I'm just worried about the pups. Mum doesn't is much more comfortable laying under my bed at night not in te whelp box beside bed hence why I have the heat mat in there. I haven't heard them sneeze or cough for the past 3hours which is good. I'm beguning to think that it is the heating as it's really only at night or maybe I'm just more aware of it then. What signs apart from not wanting to play or suckle should I really be looking for in kc in pups of this age ? None seem to have swollen glands which is good.

I have never seen it in a puppy to be honest. I really think you would be safer to ring the vet for thier opinion.r
What temperature is the room the they are in?
