Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Rescue dogs, changing from just liver to something better.

From Sunday, Im having on temporary foster two Shih tzu dogs, (boy and girl) who will be with me for around two weeks.  They havent been neglected or badly treated, their owners are now unable to look after them as they are both elderly and poorly.  The dogs have been fed on just cooked liver.  They are coming with a supply of liver, but they do need to be moved onto something a bit more complete and dry.  The change over will be gradual, I just wondered which brand of food would suit these little dogs the best.  They are 5 and 2 and a half, so not elderly dogs, and the food will have to be obtained from PAH, as Ive got to start something the new owner will be able to continue.  I should imagine if the dogs have ended up on just cooked liver, they may be a little fussy!

Any suggestions?
Thankyou

I'd probably switch them to Wainrights Trays or NatureDiet for example, good wet foods. Vera

yes that would be an idea - start to get them on to wet food complete and if you want them to be on dry start to introduce a bit into the wet food and gradually increase

My lord just liver, that is just mad, it's too rich and also I would worry about overdosing of Vitamin A a fat soluble vitamin.  That is worse than the Yorkie I looked after who was only fed cooked chicken breast!  Have people never heard of a BALANCED diet.

Good idea re the liver to wet food, then increase the amount of dry food.  Not really looking forward to cooking liver for a few days whilst I change them over, do you grill it?! (cant stand the stuff!) My Cavvie is on a complete dry food, so they will see him eating that too.

I know, regarding the Vit A situation, that was the first thing I thought as well. However, Im not going to judge the previous owners, as from what Ive heard the dogs are well behaved, housetrained, fully innoculated, etc, so if all I have to do is sort out a food issue then I feel quite fortunate!

I would simply give them what they will be going on to, and if they turn up their noses they will eat eventually.

When I fed raw, mine got about 4oz of Raw liver a week.

Other than that I have only used it as bait, either made into Liver cake (whizzed up raw in blender pound of flour a couple of eggs and baked like bread for an hour and a half on About gas mark 4.  Might be a better idea than just liver.

Also have nuked it in the microwave and then cut into chunks and dried off in oven until dry enough to handle.

I agree with changing to the wet food.If you also want to go the dry route i would advise 'Royal Canin mini junior',not the best of foods but they cant seem to resist.... Get the cheese grater out and grate the overcooked liver into the dry/wet food and mush it in,then slowly decrease the amounts.
